I read up on a past posthere about DIY mineral licks a while back. I put out 50lbs each of trace mineral and dicalcium phosphate last week in low lying area with a spring near by.

Checked it yesterday and MAN! Looks like a land mine went off there!

Where did you get those minerals? What were they exactly?

Sorry guys, here are some picks. Not great as I have the camera set up to catch a wider area. The time and dates are wrong too obviuosly.

The 20lb trophy rock was sitting up on a pile of logs. Now it is down in the hole. Doesnt seem like they are hitting it much but the dirt and mineral/dirt mix... I guess they are eating both.

Ive been mixing my own mineral for the last 2 yrs and it works GREAT !! Its the best by far results that Ive ever got by using any store bought/ manufactored mineral...I buy the bags at Tractor Supply....I buy Dumor Spring MIneral Mix and Trace Mineralized Salt with Selenium......I buy 50# bags of each and mix it 50/50 so you end up with 100# total. It cost me about $25. I put out about 2 1/2 gal of it a week and the deer/ turkey LOVE IT....Its completely gone in a week.

Good deal! I've had rabbits on my blocks, reckon the wise old owl already figured this out?

I see that it attracts owl too!
I thought that was one too.  Kinda neat to see it waiting for it's nutrients to come by.

Good job, razor. Always interesting to see how they use these areas.

I've got one on my area that started with a 50# bag of rock salt. It's now big enough to park a 4 wheeler in. Sorry though, until I get my Mac back I don't have any pictures.

You can get 50 # bags of trace minerals, salts, calcium , etc... at Feed  stores, much cheaper than what you'd pay for specialty blends for deer at hunting stores. On a private farm my friend and I hunt, there is a mineral lick that he's develped this way for the past 10 yrs or so. You could park 3-4 cars in it, and its' about 2 feet deep!!!! It can be seen via Google Earth!! sorry , cant disclose the location though, if I remember to take my camera next time we go out---I'll get a pic or it!  :readit:

Yes, definetly get your minerals at a feed store. MUCH cheaper. More bang for the "buck". Pun intended.
