STILL LEARNING.....

I started my first bareshaft tuning session yesterday and thought I'd post what I have learned. First, before I wanted to start I needed to make sure I was accurate with my "new" fletched shafts. Things were good, not great. Why?? I forgot to adjust my nocks! I sand them, just the way I do it. Flight, again, much improved. So I went out and shot just my 100 grain head with 100 grain brass insert against the identicle fletched shaft. no need to move the nock. vertically it was spot on. but....

so was the point of impact? I thought for sure i'd be way stiff. 2-3-4 arrows all spot on. THEN, I started concentrating on my form and release and one after another was 16 inches left. (i'm a righty) so, I guess I was plucking or snap shooting a bit instead of really finding anchor.

Moral of the stroy? make sure your gear and form or consistant. Had I not slowed down and thought this thing out, I'd still be scratching my head.

Only your bare shafts were hitting 16" left? At what distance? If it's at 15 yards, that's really stiff. You'll probably need to add 200 grains up front to move that far right.

Yes Sir. It's gonna get heavy up there. Is there any point where up front weight becomes a disadvantage in reguards to physics. I'm not going to shoot past 15 yards and I dont care about speed so much.

Maybe, that's what is considered EFOC (extreme front of center), and some folks think that's the best way to go, but I think your biggest concern is going to be your total arrow weight.  There is a point of diminishing returns regarding the grains per pound of bow weight. You want to try and keep it from 10-12 gpp. That'll make for a quiet bow and a reasonable trajectory.

What's your poundage at your draw weight and what's your total arrow weight?

Looper, if I'm at 325 grains up front, which should be close per tradgang insight, I'll be at 11.5gr per pound. I'm shooting a 50lb Bear Kodiak, 28in draw. I left my arrows at 30 to hopefully weaken spine a bit. We will see. 100 gr brass inserts and a test kit from 3 rivers. Can't shoot again till thursday which is a bummer. Fun process tho.

I'm guessing your shooting carbons, from my own experience cutting just a 1/4 inch off a carbon makes a huge difference. a bunch of weight up front doesn't change that much spine. And you need to be able to shoot a good three arrow group to have a good spine test.

Yes sir, carbons. I think I need to shoot a 3 arrow group as best I can, yes.

OK, got done with my bare shaft tuning. As stated, 50lb kodiak, 28in draw, 30in CX 4560's, 100 grain brass insert. I ended up with 350 grain up front for best flight. 12.28gr/lb. Man is the bow quiet. The heavier the weight got, the better the shot would feel. I'm happy.
