El Grande's illegal in PA?
« on: September 04, 2011, 01:46:00 PM »
I see the latest Pennsylvania hunting digest specifies broadheads "shall not exceed 3 inches in length".  I have some older El Grandes that will have to have a pretty big tanto tip filed in order to meet that.  Some new ones like the TuffHead also would have to be very heavily modified for that restriction.

These are pointless laws when you consider some of the more bizarre "lethal" contraptions directed to the compound market that remain legal.  What is so wrong with the idea of leaving it up to the hunters and natural selection to decide what works?  If it doesn't kill, it will fall out of fashion quick.

It leaves one to wonder if there wasn't a competitor company lobbying for this restriction.

I just measured my 190gr. El Grande and from tip to back of ferrule it measures 3 1/8". If you think I'm going to worry about an 1/8 of an inch, well lets say I won't think about it one time while I'm out hunting! Another ridiculous, baseless regulation that this state tries to put on us. Just like your not allowed to use a magnified sight or anything that will hold your bow at full draw. Oh never mind we have legalized crossbows that have both these illegal contraptions. Just my 2 cents!

Expect nothing less from the Pa GC.  Let's hope this in in width not length?

Takes the Tuff Head out too doesn't it at 3 3/16"
Why would they do that?

That's about the only thing that makes sense to me.
Do you think a Game Warden would actually enforce that reg. over a 1/8"?

Word of caution - stupid regs are still regs. As a probation officer, let me warn you not to ignore these restrictions. Odds are that you will never be checked, but if you are, you could be fined, face probation, and possibly lose your hunting priviges for a while. Better to use a BH that complies with the law and work toward getting these senseless regulations rescinded.

Your absolutely right Sam! I went and got out one of my El Grande's that I hunt with (the one I measured earlier was a new unsharpened one) and it is shaving hair close to 3". A swipe or two to the tip will put me right at the legal length.

What is their basis for this reg? Seems like someone who knows nothing about archery hunting is pulling random idiotic ideas out of you know where!

PA has got some stupid hunting regs. Most were written ages ago, and for whatever reason, they are still observed.

Just a few:

You can only hunt crows on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday!

Chipmunks are protected!

You can use a RIFLE for Fall turkey!

Hunting hours are from 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset. You have to follow their timetable in the reg book instead of actual light conditions. This one is really stupid when you live in the mountains.

Recently, there have been signs of new stupidity that didn't come here on the Mayflower.................We now have a Jr/Sr early rifle season AND muzzleloader during the 3rd week of bowseason.......... We have just included crossbows as legal weapons during all archery seasons..............Our counties that border Ohio have been used to "four points on a side" antler restrictions, now they can shoot "three up top" since the brow tine is so hard to count as the 4th point!

Honestly, if I had not been born here and grew up with all this, I could never believe it.

The last thing you need is to run into a brand newby CO that has something to prove. As dumb as you think the new regs are there is always the chance that you run into the one CO that is a letter of the law type that writes everyone for everything they can. Just be careful! I have been in law enforcement for 12yrs and there is one in every bunch that writes every ticket they can.

Wonder how this regulation came into effect?  I wonder if someone pushed it through to outlaw a competitors BH?

I need to measure the length of my broadheads now?  A really sad irony in this is that Grizzly broadheads are made right her in  Pa..  :banghead:

Like Ron White says, you can't fix stupid. What possible justification can there be for this law?
