A few years back a buddy and I got out of our stands early and decided to do some scout because the rut was not to far off. On our way up a long logging road drop offs on each side my buddy starting grunt with his call so I started grunting back. We were making so much noise walking in the dry leaves and grunting. When we got up to the top of the ridge we stopped ans sit down to take a brake. He laid his bow on the ground beside him and I had mine across my lap. We had just set them down when we heard the leaves rattling to our left and looked up there was a nice 10 point at 10 ft from us. He came in so fast we didn't know what to do. He hit the brakes as soon as he saw it wasn't another deer and he was gone before I could even move. That was the only time I ever used a grunt call and we were just playing around.
