Light draw weight shooters
« on: July 06, 2007, 01:50:00 PM »
Switched this year to shooting bows in the 40-45# range.  Just curious about the weight of hunting arrows others are shooting from bows in this weight range.  I will be hunting whitetails and hogs.

Mine are 445 grains @ about 42-44# at my draw length... I'm in the same boat, but have been assured that well tuned carbons with a sharp 2blade head should be plenty on whitetail...

Greg, the way you shoot those ACS bows, I don't think it matters much...you hit em in the boiler room and it's gonna be short blood trail   :readit:

Plenty of guys shooting 360-400gr or so and take deer and hogs at that weight. However, I'm not nearly as lucky as those other guys: I would want a bit more arrow weight at that draw weight. The lighter weights may work fine for our relatively small southern deer, but I think it's gambling with hogs. I'd want 500+gr and a sharp 2 blade head, even with your hi-performance bows.

I'm sure you'll get lots of varied opinions...your mileage may vary. Come up and shoot with us again sometime! P.S., and bring the wood riser ACS

I did not realize I was on my son's profile. He does not hunt with trad gear yet.

JC,  Thanks for the compliment.  We had several guys in that group putting them in the boiler room.  None any more so than yourself and DW.  I look forward to shooting with you again.  Interesting you mentioned the "wood riser" ACS-CX.  When I shot at your place I was favoring the metal riser, but the wood riser has become my favorite since then (with either limbs).  I guess I just had to get used to it.  I'm now shooting 515gr out of the 45# and 420gr out of the 41#.  The 41# bow just seems awfully slow with a 500gr arrow, but 420gr arrow has me concerned.

I like 9-10 grains per pound of draw.  My current favorite bow draws 45# @ my 25" draw.  I using arrows weighing 432 grains(average) which works out to 9.6 grains per pound.

I'm shooting a 45lb recurve, which pulls about 48lbs at my draw.  I use 29.75" 2016's w/ 175 grains up front.  Will probably shoot 135 grain Magnus I w/ adapter.  Don't know what they weigh, probably about 500grns.  Dropping weight is the best decision I've made.

Yup, I am shooting 47# longbow and an arrow that is just 8gpp. I am sure it is enough for anything I hunt. I will keep the shots close and broadside or darn jnear and will stick it i the ground on the other side. Shawn

I'm shooting a 45# RedWing Hunter. I shoot a 30.5"  2216 arrow with a 150 gr WW up front  4 fletch for a total of 572gr. I'll agree with JC. Just send it home.

Does'nt take a lot to punch out both lungs at 15yds on a 65lb doe.  Thinking more about the first week of November in IL.

Greg,

Just got back from a Sask bear hunt. Put a medium sized cinnamon on the ground with an ACS/CX that is 43# at my draw length. Used a GT 55/75 with a 160 gr STOS with an 125 gr steel insert for about 540gr. Not very fast but great penetration. The bear was shot at 13 yards and went about 10 yards before piling up.
