KME "friendly" single bevel 3:1 broadhead
« on: September 11, 2011, 03:56:00 PM »
I am dropping down in weight this year and shooting a Dryad 15" riser and a low 40#'s set of Dryad ACS limbs for whitetail. I have always shot Woodsmans in my bows of higher poundage, but since dropping down in weight I was a little concerned about penetration (although the ACS really zip an arrow). I was wanting to try a single bevel 3:1 ratio two blade glue-on head that would be easy to sharpen in a KME sharpening system. Any ideas?
thanks
Mark

To be honest, the only true 3:1 ratio out there is the Tuffhead. They are a sponsor.not a 3:1 or single bevel but the VPA 2 blade Penetrator is a great looking broadhead.

Grizzlys don't seem to be available but Tusker Concordes are close in dimension and Braveheart archery has them.

That Concord single bevel is a good looking head. I see that they offer KME sharp models also...Thanks

I shoot the 145 grain Concordes out of several mid 40's bows and have had excellent penetration. They can be a pain to sharpen, at least for me. I do have some KME sharp ones ready to go for this year compliments of Braveheart Archery. I love my Concordes and shoot them almost exclusively now, with the exception of my Eclipse SB, and coming soon Eclipse Werewolves in a SB.

not a 3-1 ratio but the Eclipse werewolves are a great broadhead and will penetrate just as good as a bh that is 3-1 if they are razor sharp.

I am shooting the Tuffhead and they will last you a long time.  I have been abusing one of my practice heads and it is taking it.  Have not shot a critter yet, that wille be the test.  These fly wonderful and no issues with penetration.  Easy to put on an arrow straight.

I have been working hard on wrecking as many 3to1 - 2 blades as possible. I'll post my recent test results and data and pictures soon as I get time and talk to few of manufacturers first.

The best one out there is a STOS bar none as far as my testing is going. Newer models with tanto tip of course. Older ones 3yrs+ older have sharp point will curl on hard bone - big hard bone - not whitetail bones - I'm talking big stuff - bison - buff etc. You will not beat the price of a six pack of STOS either.

Dave,  I didn't know stos made a true 3:1.  Are they making one now?

They are not true 3 to 1 but as far as strength and length - best two blade I've found. Most full three inch length are not strong enough in front end for heavy bone work. I'll clarify that heavy bone means - Bison and buff of African or Australian variety.

For whitetail and Elk my findings are not relevant as most 3 to 1 out there will do fine on them. The Tuff Head will do fantastic job on North American game.

Have you held a Tuff Head in your hand?

I think you might change your mind.

Thanks for everyones input. After doing some reading I am going to try some STOS for the whitetail I will be hunting. They seem to hold up well and seem to sharpen pretty easy. I didn't read anything negative about them for deer sized game...
Thanks again

Charles,

Not only have I held the Tuff Head - I have been shooting six of them since bought them from Joe at Compton in June. I am shooting them at 950gr total arrow weight at 155 - 160fps out of 82# Morrison Shawnee. I love the design and sharpness etc.

Most of the time whitetail bones aren't so much to deal with, but if you manage to center the leg bone on a mature whitetail, you can do some damage to the tip of any 2-blade if you don't have a tanto tip.  I did that with an Abowyer and snapped off the end.  (Thankfully the remainder of the blade still made it to the heart).  I filed a heavy tanto on it and it still works fine, just alot lighter now.

Hunt it, what kind of tests have you done to compare the STOS and the Tuff Head.  A local shop owner speaks well of the STOS too, but it's just hard to imagine it outpacing the Tuff head

I just shot a doe with an Eclipse Teflon coated 2 blade head at 125gr. With the 5/16 insert thread adapter it weighed 177gr. Not a 3 to 1 or even close.

The onside shot hit behind the shoulder traveling somewhat downward. The arrow exited the opposite side but no complete pass through. It snapped her off side femur like it was nothing and the head is still true. It was sticking out about 5" as she ran through trees. It snapped off about five yards after that as she raked it across a tree.

I was using a 50 @ 28 mid 70s Super Grizzly drawn to 29. I will be buying more of these Eclipse heads as this one is my only one. I got it through last year's arrow swap.

Total arrow weight was 477gr out of full length GT Trad for about 9gpp.

My most recent tests have been with leg bones of mature Bison Bulls. I have a source that is saving me these from fresh kills. The bone just below the ball joint is from 6 to 8" thick. These bones are fresh meaning blood and meat still on them not dried in any fashion.

Please keep in mind that these are extreme tests I'm doing here in preparation for an Austrailian buff hunt next year.

I am shooting 82# longbow with 950gr arrow moving 155-160fps. I have not been able to damage a STOS yet (160gr with 175gr insert)

I have been using STOS heads for many years on bear, moose hogs, deer and have never had one let me down yet. The STOS used in tests are newer ones with tanto tip design.

As I am discussing my results from these tests with manufacturers I am not going to post testing results as of yet. I have documented all results well and taken pictures of all shots and penetration results.

I would not hesitate to recommend Tuff Heads for anything in North America at this point. More testing to be done.

David,

I certainly will be eager to see your test results since I will also be headed back to Oz next July for more buffalo hunting. Of course, you already knew that.
