Limb butts too long on Black Max Limbs???
« on: September 17, 2011, 11:19:00 AM »
Bought a used Morrison Riser and I ordered a set of Black Max limbs and got them yesterday. I slapped them in this morning and shot it. WOW, I liked it. Then after about 15 shots I looked at the riser it appears the limb butts on the limbs might be long and they rubbed bottomed out on the limb pocket and cracked both sockets. The top pocket is pretty bad but the bottom one is just starting to crack.
Have you ever ran into the limb butts being too long?
I can't see how installed them wrong? (I am an admitted ILF Newb.)

Any ideas? I am guessing I can sand down the limb butts and glue the riser?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Nick

Nick....It is not uncommon for some limbs to be too long for certain risers. Common practice is to put the limbs on a sander and take off about 1/8" of the butts. Then seal with superglue or a sealant. I know its really common on ILF limbs to a DAS connections. I tried to place some Samick limbs on one of my Dryad risers last night for a form bow, and the limbs are going to have to be sanded down for it to work.

Mark,
Thanks. I guess I should have paid more attention when I installed the limbs. Unfortunately I didn't and let my excitement to shoot the bow get the best of me...
I have the riser glued up and in a clamp currently. I am going to take a belt sander to the limbs this afternoon.

Oldskool what are you using for a washer under those limbbolts? Not that it is the problem I was just curious from the picture. Hope you get it worked out. Chris

Chris,
I bought the riser used so I can't say for sure exactly what the washer is but it just appears to be a thin cord reinforced rubber washer.

I believe I have everything straightened out with the riser and limbs. I have the riser glued (crack didn't pull together as nicely as I had hoped) and I have the limb butts sanded/ground off and rounded. I have nice clearance all around now so I should be good to go.

I am still pi$$ed at myself for not using my head and looking it over and checking clearances before shooting.

  Oh well, live and learn.

Also, these Black Max limbs are NICE! I really like them! Now I need to find a Morrison Metal handle!!

It looks like a real early Morrison riser and definitely not the type of washer currently used.

Glad you were able to fix your riser Old School.
LongStick is correct, thats an older Morrison. His new ones have larger pockets to keep this from occuring, due to variations in ILF manufacturers components.

The washers that are used are a plastic style. I am not sure if your washer could damage anything or not. The plastic one may distribute things evenly, not sure. It may just be a "looks"thing.
