No mention of Jack Howard?!!??
« on: September 18, 2011, 06:34:00 PM »
I was just thumbing through 2 of my favorite books today, Dan Bertlan's Traditional Bowyers of America and MR James 45 Unforgetable Bowhunters. No mention of Jack Howard? Am I the only one who wondered why this great bowhunter, writer and master Bowyer was not in either book? He could easily had a chapter and a half written about his life, exploits and custom Gamemaster Jet.

Top ten of all time in my book. Talked with him many times, he did some intensive research on his bows.

Probably because Jack's bows were not "Custom Built" with a variety of wood options. That's the only reason I can think of. It was more of a production bow even though Jack built them himself.

I regret selling my Gamemaster Jet back in '95 but it was just too long for my ground hunting setups. I did manage to take a few deer. The fellow I sold it to said the Brazilian Rosewood riser was the prettiest he ever seen on a Howard bow.....

I think they stopped the cutting / import of new cut Brazilian Rosewood. I heard only the old cut stump wood is available now. ?

You've probably seen the stuff in the archives here on TG; that's all I know of.  I just read through all that stuff a couple of days ago myself (again).   My dad was all about archery in the 60s-early 70s, and had a shop in southern California.  He was friends with Jack, but I don't know the details.  (Dad died in 2007.)  He field-tested a Gamemaster in 1968, and was talking to Jack about doing a follow-up to that in 2005 around when Jack died.  I wish I knew more details.  But dad had plenty of good things to say about Jack Howard's bows and archery.  After dad died, we found three brand new Gamemasters he had "hidden" in the garage!

I do have a copy of the Bow & Arrow magazine where they talk about how Jack made his bows, and where C.R. Learn and my dad went out hunting with them on Catalina Island; PM me if you're interested.

I'll be watching to see if you come across anything written about Jack.
