Feather quality/prices
« on: September 19, 2011, 09:29:00 AM »
Holy cow I just went to order some feathers and now it seems you can't get premium full length feathers! Trueflight has downgraded them to commercial grade, and likely the best you can get out of a full length is a single 51/2" feather! Whats the point of buying full length then?

For several years I've used a 4 4" fletch configuration, so I can cut 2 fletches from each full length. I usually do my arrows with 2 natural turkey feathers, and 2 white. this way I use as much of the turkey feather as I can.

Supposedly the price for the new "commercial grade" feathers is lower, but its not much!

I guess like the Ronnie Dunn song goes- " cost of living's high, and goin up"
...stood alone on a montaintop, starin out at a great divide, I could go east, I could go West, it was all up to me to decide, just then I saw a young hawk flyin and my soul began to rise......

I'm able to get one 5 3/8" banana feather from each full length and what is left over, I save and use on kids arrows.

I shot with a guy a couple weeks ago at a 3D shoot that had just fletched up his arrows with those same Bear Paw feathers from Kustom King and he was going to donate a couple dozen to the raffle table.

After shooting the round (35 targets), his feathers were all mangled, and he said he would feel guilty putting them out for raffle, because the just didn't hold up.  I told him to go ahead and donate them and put our other buddies name and phone number on the item.   :bigsmyl:   he declined, but thought I had a good idea.

I guess I'll order some from Gateway and see how they are. They make no mention of problems with the full length, but you have to order them in lots of 50 or 100. I like truFlight's colors a little better, but if I get white that works.
