Browning Nomad Stalker [questions]
« on: September 25, 2011, 09:42:00 AM »
I recently bought a Browning Nomad Stalker, 52" and 45#@28". The bow is in very nice condition, with two holes for a sight in the riser being the only blemish. The one thing about the bow that seems odd is that the window is cut 3/8" past center. Were these bows normally cut this far past center? If they were, what did they use for a side plate? I added about 3/8" of felt pad to the side of the window to bring it to center. It shot 29" 1916's quite well, but the bow is noisy. I have to work on quieting it down. Brace height is 7&3/4". Would I be better off with a flemish twist string? Also, can anyone tell approx. when this bow was made? The s/n is 2W5338-1? Any and all remarks and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
DaveP

Are you sure the bow is cut 3/8" past center? That's the equivalent of 6/16" and most bows don't go beyond 3/16" past center.

I have a buddy that shoots one. Good shooter for a short bow. I set it up but don't remember it being that far past center. I has the original side plate on. As long a everything looks sound I wouldn't worry about it. He shoots a b50 flemish with some beaver balls and lighter arrows and its doesn't seem very loud to me.

Early 70's, late 60's. Use a standard Dacron string, AMO 52". Add some heavy Catwhiskers and the bow will be quiet. Brownings were not known to be noisy. I shoot a 50" 55# Cobra for turkey and its whisper quiet.

Try increasing your brace and adding some silencers to the string you already have.

Night Wing,
This is how I measured. I laid the bow on a flat surface with the sight window facing down. I measured the width of the limbs near the fade outs. This is 1&3/4". The distance from the flat surface to the side of the sight window is 1&1/4". If the bow is centershot, the distance from the flat surface to the side of the window would be 7/8". It's 1&1/4". this leaves a window thats 3/8" past center.
Other measurements are:
9/16"- thickness of riser at sight window
1&13/16"- from flat surface to opp. side of the riser
7/8"- from flat surface to center of limb tips
The bow seems sound but noisy. If I can get it quieted down I would like to get it refinished in a matte clear finish and use it as a back up bow or a blind or turkey bow. Anybody else have any thoughts about this bow and it's centercut.
Thanks all,
DaveP

I'd also recommend increasing the brace height and adding cat whiskers.  I don't have any information about how far these bows are cut from center though.  Bear weather rests are quiet and forgiving, you might want to put one on without the felt pad and try it out.

I'm not saying it isn't cut as deep as you say but that's a pretty unorthodox way to measure it.I've never seen any of those bows cut that deep.Normally you string the bow, stand behind it and line up the string with your eye, till it is centered on both limbs. Now,how far is the string from the sight window?Normally there would be about 1/8" space between string and window-something like that.

Sometimes a change of string type may help with noise, plus the other stuff mentioned. Some of the endless loop strings can be very stiff at the served ends and this can cause quite a twang.Make sure you only use dacron, either way.

My Nomad liked 7 7/8" brace height a lot. She was still a little clunky, but that was easily fixed with cat whiskers. I used an endless loop dacron string.

DaveP,

I think you need to call Browning and get the info on your 52" Browing Nomad Stalker. They'll know for sure and once you know for sure, it'll be easy to tune an arrow to your bow.

During my last 47 years of bowhunting, I've never seen or heard of any all wooden hunting recurve cut 3/8" past center. Since I'm now 61 years old, my memory could be slipping, but I don't think so.

Night Wing,
I agree with you. I've been shooting bows since 1960 and never ran across anything like this. I'll be 70 in Feb. Do you agree with me regarding how I measured it?

Dave,

here is an old post on how some have measured or suggested how to measure it.
