to stiff or not
« on: September 25, 2011, 03:53:00 PM »
I am pretty new to shooting.  I have a Bear Super Kodiak. 50# @28 and I am drawing 28"  It has the stock string and the side plate that came on the bow new.  I have an opportunity to purchase some Easton XX75 2315 arrows brand new uncut for 25 dollars.  I have been messing around with Stu Millers calculator and when I plug all the numbers in these arrows with a 200 grain tip and I believe 32 inch arrow come in with nearly identical numbers.  Does this sound correct.  I really do not care about the length of arrow and I would like to use 200 grain tips.  I do not want to let a good deal slip by but its only a good deal if they will work.  Please let me know.

I would go with a different arrow. I think you will be too stiff.  I would think 2016 would work with 125-145 heads.

Maybe 2117 if you have to shoot 200 grain heads.

bareshaft and cut as needed to get your flight right.

The problem with the calculator is that everyone thinks that it is gospel it is not. IMO the calculator has alot of people shooting the wrong arrow for their set ups because all they do is fill in the blanks and cut their arrows to what it says without bareshafting. Especially those that are shooting carbon arrows.

28.25" 2018 with 200 grains worked in my 50 pound super K Bear, when I went to a shorter draw and a six pounds, at my shorter draw, heavier Super K, the same arrows cut down to 27" still shot good and shot completely through the deer I shot with it as well. I think that the 2315 and the 2117s will be too stiff. When you say 200 is that point plus broadhead adapter total? If you go to a fast flight the 2018 may need to have a slightly lighter point something like 175 grains total, which would be for example,a Zwicky Delta with the long aluminum adapter.

Even full length they will be stiff with 200 up front. I would try a 2018 as mentioned cut to 29"s and the 200 up front,or maybe a 2117 or 2020 and leave them both say 31"s and try the 200 up front, cut back a bit if weak. As said above Stu's calculator is just a starting point and IMO it does not get people very close. You may get away with the 2315s with 275-325 up front left long. Stu always has everyone I know of stiff. I have seen guys say, man Stu has me dead on, than I see them shoot and you can tell they are way overspined. Shawn

OK I have been shooting 2117 and they shoot great. I just had this opportunity and thought I would check if they would work.  Sounds like I will just stick with what has been working.

Thanks
