St Jude Cohutta Bear Hunt 2011
« on: November 02, 2011, 02:17:00 PM »
Here's the Motley Crew....

Karl, Me, Keith, and Doug....

Karl won the hunt, and got to see SEVEN bears that weekend.  I have never seen the like of bear sign in my life as I did that weekend.

I got a great stalk on a 250#er that came off a steep bank and went 10 yards past a tree I'd leaned up against for 10 minutes....wish I would have waited another 3 minutes and this guy would have been in my lap.

It was a really cool scene let me tell ya...it was misty that morning, like you may have seen in one of my favorite hunting pics of all time which was a misty morn at Cohutta....and the terrain was ferns and patchy briers.  What made this scene so unique is that I could not see the bears legs at all for the 1st 30 yards I saw him traveling downhill....he looked like he was standing on a sled and gliding down the mountain in slow motion.

Anyhow, I put a sneak on him and stayed around 35-40 yard for a while just trying to get close being careful not to make any noise due to it being so dry this year. Well, I couldn't see underfoot very well, and I finally stepped on a nickle sized stick and man what a snap it made....and the jig was up.  But it sure was fun while it lasted.

Karl, again, the St Jude winner had a close encounter with a 300 #er but it didn't work out.

We all had a blast and ate great.....too bad the season ended and I never got time to go back. I just didn't get my 'Cohutta Fix' this year at all. Long wait till next year.

Here's a couple more pics ....

Just wanted to put up a post so folks would know the hunt took place and it was yet another great St Judes Adventure.     :campfire:

No Mike.....that's my 'standard issue uniform' no matter what state I'm in.

Like I said...all of use thought a bear was hiding behind every tree there was so much sign....not sure how we didn't bring home a bruin.    :dunno:

A year late and dollar short or something like that.....

Looks like you guys had a great time and a few opportunities.  I like the big circus tent to keep the rain out of the Safari!

Yeah Barry....we decided to put it up for the 1st time....and it was really nice the evening it rained....kept all our stuff dry.

The stakes for that tarp are a very unique shape, and are designed to 'dig in' instead of 'pull out'.

You know you are welcome next year as well.    :campfire:

Yeah...its all self contained.

Conquest Conqueror is the brand, made in SO Africa.

Very cool. I have been saying I wanted to give Cohutta a try for several years and have not made it yet.
