Broken limb, so I need some new bow advice.
« on: October 08, 2011, 01:58:00 AM »
I purchased a 10 year old Great Plains Rio Bravo take down recurve about 9 months ago and I believe I was atleast the third owner. The top limb broke, but I hold nothing against Great Plains. I love the bow and how it shot and I can honestly say that I dry fired the bow once before, as I'm sure we all have from time to time. I drew back and my fingers pinched the knock off the string and I released without knowing. This did not break the bow, but through time it began to delaminate from a crack in the wood. Ok, Ok now to the question. I love the looks of a true custom recurve, but the pains of getting new limbs are timely and costly. About 410 to be exact, but I would then have a brand new bow as fare as I'm concerned. The other option I have considered is to get a bow like the Hoyt dorado. From what I hear they are very durable and shoot very well. It would also be very easy to get a new set of limbs or different poundage limbs depending on my neads through the years. I know that they are not what most of us consider traditional bows, but at the end of the day without attaching a sight I have no advantage over anyone else. I would appreciate any advise, or suggestion that might help me out. Even different affordable bow options that you may feal fill my niche rembering that I'm not trying to stray away from instintive shooting, so I don't nead adjustable tiller limbs, stabalizers, sight options, and lasers.

alot of people love the hoyts they perform really well and you dont have to worry so much on all the pretty bow woods. they are very traditional, just not as fancy as others. its still is just a stick and string no matter how you put it. I almost bought a hoyt buffalo at etar I really liked it, had some good mass looked pretty good half black and half wood. Just didnt have the funds than. As long as your happy with the grip and the way it shoots thats all that matters. All my buddies shoot compounds and I'm the only traditional guy but I made that choice and I'm so happy I did. I have never had this much fun shooting anything else. I now have 4 traditional bows three bob lee's and a lewis hollow archery longbow/recurve. And i have only been shooting traditional for three years now, its what I love and thats all that matters. So no matter what you decide to do, if your happy the gang is happy good luck and let us know what you get take care brad

May I suggest shooting a Bear T/D.
They are fantastic. For $800 you get a NEW bow with it's timeless design with a warranty and Bear Archery is making them real nice once again.
Also, they are now offering them made with Bubinga. A or B riser. long or short limbs.
If you have an opportunity to shoot one you will be quite surprised how sweet they are.
Good Luck.........Philip
