Almost "dumbed it up good"!
« on: October 15, 2011, 10:31:00 AM »
Made what I thought was a perfect shot on a deer last weekend about 6:30 PM. When I got down the blood on my arrow was not impressive.  Oddly, it was mainly on the back third of my white fletching and not as much nor as bright as I'd hoped for. Decided to ease up the getaway trail to see if I could just mark some drops. I'd gone maybe 50 yards when I see the deer bedded, watching its back trail. Should have backed off then, but excitement got the better of me and I decide to close the distance and get off another shot.  Deer was facing away at about 45 deg. and my second shot clipped about three back ribs and penetrated poorly.  Deer jumps up and runs away with me in hot pursuit.  I did not have a plan if I caught it, but am reasonably certain I would have gotten the worst of it.  Luckily,  the deer went down for good before I closed any distance.  To top it off it was getting dark, I failed to mark the spot properly and had to circle to locate it after I collected my gear and returned a few minutes later.  The moral of this story is there's a good reason they say wait 30 minutes.  In the words of all my male relatives growing up, "don't do as I do, do as I say do"!

Its a good thing you didnt catch him when you were chasing him. I used to work in a hospital in northern Michigan and saw the damage a not quite dead buck can inflict. It almost always happened when the hunter decided to finish the job with his hunting knife instead of waiting for the deer to expire

Richard,

Me thinks I need to send back your book for a close re-reading!

Doc,
I'm blaming it on the third shift job and lack of rest.  My thought processes and decision making ability are a bit suspect sometimes now.  Thanks, and I pray the Good Lord is helping carry your burdens, too.

We have all been there Richard. My first deer with a bow. I was so excited, did many things wrong. Poor hit, followed too soon also. But I was just young and lucky. Brings back memories.
