Muzzy Broadhead ?????
« on: July 10, 2007, 08:12:00 PM »
I would like some input on the Muzzy Phantoms, flight, sharpness out of package, etc. I was also wondering if the main blade can be removed from the ferral, and if so is the main blade like the Magnus Stigers in that the two main blades are one solid piece. Thanks for the help.

I just got a pack. I got the 220/200 grn model. I'm shooting the 200 grn setup( without bleeder blades). They aren't as sharp as a Thunderhead out of the package, but it was reasonably sharp. I could feel the main blade wobble in the ferrule ( just like a Steel Force), so I pinched it in a vice. The same day, I shot a groundhog with it @ 28 yds, so they seem to shoot pretty well. Oh, one more thing, and in my opinion a big thing, the groundhog made it about 12 feet till he died and there wasn't a single spot of blood on the ground. I'll find something else that shoots well.

I shot a six point and an eight point and a doe last seaaon and the arrows flew great. The blood trails were the best I have ever had and I will be using them this year for deer and hogs.

I've been bowhunting since the mid 50's. There are lots of good bhs out there but I have it narrowed down to two....Phantoms (four blade) and the Razorcaps. Both are stainless and multiblade. The Phantoms have worked really well for me but they do need to be sharpened...even out of the package. My wife shot a pass thru on a black bear with a 100 grain Phantom four blade out of her 46# recurve and got a 30 yard blood trail that was excellent even though she didn't need it. Last year with her bow set at 43# she got complete penetratiion on a four pointer. These heads are  very good. The main  blades can be removed if done carefully but I don't know why you would want to do that. The bleeder blade is removeable and resharpenable. This is a link to a test on the Phantom...hope it helps.http://www.bowsite.com/BOWSITE/features/articles/equipment/penetration/

I first started using Phantoms ten years or so ago. A big bow hunter in Africa called me as he knew the guy I was hunting with and asked me to bring him six dozen Phantoms. Once there I had dinner with this guy. He and his buddies had been using the Phantoms on everything from small antelope all the way up to Rhino. He swore by them and said they had tried them all and the Phantoms were by far the best. These guys were all shooting 100 to 120lb Darton compounds. That sold me, I have used them two bladed most of the time and use bleeders once in awhile. These broadheads are very sharp and blades are strong. They resharpen very quickly with a few strokes of most carbide quick sharpeners. I have not bought any of the new ones since muzzy bought out the company. I have however looked at the new ones and they appear to be every bit as good if not better than old ones.

I`ve not used a Muzzy product yet that was not top notch. I have killed several critters with the phantom and the three blade 125 grain model which is actually my favorite.I killed a few pigs this year with a 45 lb slow longbow with the phantoms with very good results.RC

Guys, I'm hunting this year after about 40 years without.  I just traded for a 3 pack of Muzzy 3 blade and a 3 pack of 4 blade.  I'll be hunting deer and elk with a 53# Fedora Jr Big East drawn to 48#.  The blades are 100gr.  The total arrow weight is about 450gr (Easton 2114's cut to 29").  Assuming I place the shot well, will my equipment do the job?  Also, what tip do you recommend for turkey?

Thanks
