Oh no..not ANOTHER spine question?!?!
« on: July 12, 2007, 01:34:00 PM »
OK, my simple brain really gets confused when trying to deal with spine issues...especially carbons since they don't "call" them the same thing.  Keep in mind, I am relatively new to this.  I have a modern, glass lam r/d longbow 64" and 58#@28", which is my approximate draw length.  My local pro has some Beman MFX (with the wood finish) that seem like they would finish out nicely weight wise...they are 400's.  If I was to shoot approximately 225 gr. up front would these be close?  I prefer to leave them full length for all the weight I can get.  Any advice from the carbon gurus?

You would most likely have to leave them full length to get good flight out of them. Ya could probably shorten them up but than ya would need more weight up front. Bareshaft them with the 225 and see how they group and fly. I would say ya may be Ok but ya have to shoot them to tell. Shawn

I should also have said if the bow is cut past center ya should be Ok, if not ya may have to add more weight to the full length shaft from the get-go. I used to shoot 400s out of my 62-65# recurves cut to 29"s and they were cut well past center. Shawn

I am pretty sure this bow is cut to center but not past.  What you are saying is what I was afraid of.  I am getting decent flight out of 35/55's out of this bow that I tuned for a 49# longbow...and they are full length with 225 total upfront.  I have one arrow to try but I would have to order weighted inserts since they are smaller in diameter than my GT's and I hate to order them then not use them cause the arrows won't work.  Thanks Shawn!

Ya may want to try a carbonwood 3000, full length and 225 up front, I bet that would be the ticket. Shawn

Is that a standard 5/16" shaft...I have a bunch of 50 and 100 gr. brass inserts that fit that size shaft (i.e. GT and CE).  Thanks for the heads up on that shaft by the way.  I will check into it.
