One of my best friends lost his mom yesterday. What I call a REAL Grand Old Lady!!  Today, I reminded him of something an old friend told me one day when I was feeling particularly sad about her pending death. She looked at me matter of factly and said "Fred, you have to die to go to heaven ..... it's not a bad reward"!

I think it helped.

That was a VERY nice read Pat. Thank you! Must be a really special place and I'm sure you know you are very fortunate to be able to still hunt it. Thanks for sharing!

Very nice story... Nothing like memories of hunting with Dad, Granpa, and others that got us started in bowhunting.

Pat, Thanks so much, great story. My Dad passed 20 years ago and to this day I carry a photo of us hunting in my back tag and his compass in my pocket. I would not leave for a hunt without either.

Great read. I wish I would have had that kind of time with my Dad. My father spent all his time working at the big airplane factory here in Saint Louis. He loved his job and had little time for anything else. My brothers and I learned our hunting skills by reading and trial and error. You’re a lucky man to have those memories.
I try not to let my mind wander...It is too small and fragile to be out by itself.

Although he is still alive but not hunting any longer reflections of hunting with my dad are beginning to revel themselves. Heading out this morning to take a friend (that had to sell his family farm) on a gun hunt on my home place. As I pass these areas I will ponder what occurred there many years ago with dad by my side showing me the ropes. I think as we pass these areas I will share my memories with my friend. Good stuff!

I got a little misty reading the last part of your story.  Some of the places my dad taught me to hunt are still wild places, and I may need to go visit them soon.  Even so, I can close my eyes and melt away the years to find myself at his side.  Thank you for reminding me to look back.

Pat, as long as they remain in your memory they're never really gone.
We live in the present, we dream of the future, but we learn eternal truths from the past
When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice.
Life is like a wet sponge, you gotta squeeze it until you get every drop it has to offer
