Public land can surely be rough.  I've had times where I've been a mile or more in only to find a stand 10 yards from where I'd been the week before.  So, normally I just mosy off into a new spot.

That's why I aerial scout the areas I want to hunt and try to find a few back up spots in the area in case there's someone or a stand in the area.  I also try to avoid areas that I hear a lot of 'buzz' about.  

I find most guys are very nice towards me.  Especially if I'm taking my trad bow.  If you are nice to them, more often they come to you nicely.  I had a rough last 2 years as far as hunting went and almost quit, but I stuck with it and filled both my tags this year.

Here in Washington we have huge expanses of public land so the occasional unintended close proximity of another hunter does happen. The best medicine is boots, quadriceps and patience. But don't get me going on ATV's...
