31" arrows 5 VS 4 inch feathers help
« on: November 21, 2011, 01:32:00 PM »
I have already paper tuned with the just the shaft. They are cut and ready to go. Now I am getting ready to fletch. What are you guys thoughts on using 5” inch feathers. I normally use 4. What should I expect if anything in flight?
Hopefully you will see me as a better person today than I was yesterday..

i wouldn't expect anything different if everything is paper tuned.

If you have a decent release and are shooting field points, 4" should be fine.  With broadheads, if I use a 4" then I go with a  4-fletch--just to be on the safe side.

If your tuned and have a clean release the 4 fletch will handle broad heads just fine.  If you like 4 inch fletch but want 5 inch fletch flight control go with 4 inch - 4 fletch.   It has the same surface areas as 3 - 5 inch fletch and you don't have to worry about nock orientation.

It depends. If you are a decent shot, I'd suggest 4" mainly becuase it will have a little less drag. If you need the fletch to correct/help any shooting error, then the 5" can make a big difference especially with broadheads.

I was going to say you can just forget the feathers all together if you can paper tune a bare shaft.   :D

I like 4x4.  Looks nice, only need one color, doesn’t mater which way you nock it, and I get great clearance with 75x105.

I'm with Ragnarok Forge and xtrema312.  My arrows are 31" 3/4 long and am shooting 4 inch 4 fletch.  I like them for all the reasons stated above.  I also think they are quieter than 5".

Mine are 31" too and I use 4 inch 4 fletch, again for all the above. But I did shoot one fletch off and have never replaced it and it flies just fine, too.

I use 4" fletch and shoot 31" arrows. Everything is just fine.

Good luck.

I have my arrows tuned to where I can shoot a bare shaft at around 30 yards and it flys well. Of course I also have outstanding FOC. My point is if you have a properly tuned shaft you can use very little feather. I use 4" and if I wanted I could use 2".

I prefer a helical too. I know this sounds weird, but with the helical it slows down the shot for me. What I mean is that during the shot, I pick up the arrow spinning in flight. I fletch with one white fletch, and can pick up the fletchings in flight. It helps me replay the shot in my head to notice the shot placement and penetration better.

All my arrows are full length and have 5" feathers. You can use other cut 5" feathers and get different results 5" sheild high backs and traditional cut will drag and sound a little more than 5" parabolic(mostly what I use now)and banana cut. You can also get a burner and have at making your own shapes. I dont use 4", what heads are you looken to use?
