That just gave me some awesome ideas.  Where did you get the bone?  I wonder if a bone at the pet store would work maybe the smoked flavor/smell would mask the bone smell?  I'm assuming the smell is kin to splitting a horn with a bandsaw to make a bow?

Jeff,
  You can help mask the smell by soaking the antler or pieces in a pan of water for a few days...It will help keep the dust down some...This may gum up the sander a little but get a rubber block to keep the grit clean or an old tennis shoe..
