Roger Rothhaar authored a book so entitled. He's a pretty smart fella..
A front blew through here this morning. Along with it we had a little rain. This evening seemed like an ideal time to be in the woods -- and it was.
I was on the edge of a slough up in a big oak that was dropping acorns.. I saw several deer over the next hour, some bucks but nothing I was interested in.. Then, in that magic last 15 minutes of daylight I heard another deer just behind me. I turned my head slowly and was surprised to see a dandy buck almost below me and to my right.. I suppose he was about 18" wide, with good mass and ten long points.. Yeah, he excited me, for this area, he was grand ! That rascal fed on my right side and behind me until it was too dark to shoot.. Much of the time he was within 10' of the trunk of the tree I was in. Never had any kind of shot..
I waited another 30 minutes or so and eased down. The 3/4 of a mile walk back to the truck was beautiful under the starlight sky !!
Lord, there's not much in this old world that's more fine than a crisp fall evening in the whitetail woods with your favorite longbow !
