Javelina and Hogs January hunt
« on: November 27, 2011, 04:31:00 PM »
We have had a group cancellation for our first week of hunting on our west Texas ranch lease.  We now have room for some hunters the week of January 21-27.  This ranch has always had plenty of big hogs and several areas that hold Javelina.  Previous Texas Sweat hunts were held on this ranch and there have been a lot of successful hunters visiting the ranch on those hunts.  Over 100 sections (66,000 acres) and lots of waterholes to hunt.  We provide a clean place to stay, cot, bathroom, kitchen facilites, refrigerator, freezer, running water, cleaning station, pre corned hunting areas.   No meals provided.  $150 per day.  3-5 day hunts.  Texas license required, out of state permit available at most sporting goods dealers (Walmart in Odessa or Midland) is good for 5 days.   Corn will be available at the ranch.  Tradganger Shaun Webb will be your camp host for this hunt.  We have not hunted this ranch since last Feburary.  Get first dibs on these Javy's and Hogs.

We also have openings other weeks on our Lake Whitney ranch south of Ft. Worth.

See our Hog page on our website for more information.  Send me a PM for booking info.

Is there a specific number that you're looking for?  I want to go, but I'm trying to convince 2 buddies to come.

Is it trad only?...they're wheel shooters.

We have been looking for something like this for a long time. We found a place and commited to it a few weeks ago.(first week of Feb.)But iam going to have to keep this place in mind for the future. Some of us still use training wheels, do you allow them or trad only?

We are an equal opportunity operation.  If you bowhunt and shoot something other than a stickbow you are welcome.  Our building can handle up to 12 at a time so you can come by yourself or with some friends. We could take more if the need arises and you are willing to tent camp but we will not be booking that large of a group this year.  We have hunters booked through most of February and we don't need any more pressure than filling up that first week hunt.  We will hunt part of the ranch for one group and the next group will go to another section so we don't have to hammer the same waterholes week after week.  We don't really know how many hunters we can handle with this rotation so we are limiting our hunter numbers until we see what impact we are having on the game population after 4 weeks of hunts. We may be able to expand our available hunting offerings for next year. This is a big ranch that Shaun and I have hunted for several years but we have only hunted a fraction of it.

We hunted the ranch in February last year and have the hog hunting lease. There will be a limited number of deer lease hunters on the ranch October through January 15.  We are not allowed to hunt any hogs during deer season.  There are not a lot of deer to hunt and only a handfull of deer hunters on the place. The quail and dove hunting is also leased to another outfit. You may see some bird hunters on the ranch until bird season is over but that has not affected us on any hunt.  The family and friends of the family that runs the ranch may hunt some in our abscence.  One of them kills hogs with a rifle to use for coyote bait.  Another one runs some dogs on the ranch but doesn't kill that many hogs.  The landowner recognizes there is value in having enough hogs for us to hunt and has agreed not to bring in any helicopter gunners until after we are done and may or may not spend the money on that depending on how bad the hog infestation is at that time.  I attended a feral hog conference in Seymour Texas, sponsored by Texas A and M last May.  Their research shows that with all efforts to control hog populations (even with aerial gunning) the feral hog population grows by 15% every year.  Hog conference presentation indicated that typical helicopter control costs around 85 cents an acre, a spendy proposition on a 66,000 acre ranch where they only run around 8 cows per square mile. They have been gunning hogs in west Texas for years and we have always found hogs on this ranch. I don't see any reason why this year would be any different.

Yes, this is the Odessa ranch.  We only hunt this ranch in January and February, both Javelina and feral hogs.  We also have hog hunting only at Lake Whitney Texas, (Between Waco and Ft. Worth) late January through September.

We were planning to book the Jan. 21-27 dates since that is the dates that were cancelled.   We are booked full for January 28 through Feb 11. We have added a couple hunters later in February so I guess we could do that for anyone.  We have a limit as to how many we would like to add now, 8-10 more is where we will close our booking for this season in west Texas.  We can take up to 8 hunters Jan. 21-27, or Feb 19-23.  We have room to add up to 4 bowhunters only the week of Feb 12-18.  We have several trad gang hunters coming that week.
