I want to apologize in advance for a long post, but here it goes. I have been shooting for about a year now with a recurve and I have been struggling with inconsitent arrow flight. My bow is a left handed Holm-made River Runner, 53#@29.5 which is my draw length. I have many different arrow spines in both carbon and aluminum. I have been shooting Easton game getters in 400 (2117) at 30.5" with 100gr point. They seem to fly well as long as my release is clean. I have limited my shooting to 15 yards (what my basement can handle) When I shoot a bare shaft I get a nock right kick, but they hit with my fletched arrows. I plugged in my specs on Stu Miller's calculator and it says my arrow setup is way too stiff for my bow by a long ways. Actually according to the calculator I should shoot a 33" GG 400 with 100gr point. So I try that arrow and get a violent nock right kick and the arrow hits 10" left of my fletched arrows. I am not a consistent shooter and my groups at 15 yards are in the 4-6" range.

OK, multiple questions: 1)based on my bow specs, what would an experienced archer expect my arrow spine to be (assuming game getter arrows); 2)Is it possible that form issues are causing an extremely stiff arrow (according to the calculator) to fly better than the "correct" spine arrow?; 3)Am I way off on what I am doing?

Again sorry for the long post and thank you for any advice for a newbie.

Don't know a lot about aluminum, but I think you're way over spined with a 2117. Especially with only 100 gr. up front. 2018 maybe?

I'd try a 2018 with 125 gr point.

Yup, way to stiff even if you take Stu's advise. Go with a 30.5" 2018 with 125 grain point as mentioned above that will get ya close. Shawn

Thanks for the responses everyone...now a followup: Should you get perfect arrow flight from a bare shaft arrow if the spine is matched to your bow?

Night Wing

Just curious as always.

What number do you have in the Center Cut/Strike Plate Position box? That's a critical box.

The reason I'm asking. I have a 30" draw length and out of my 42# bow, when I want a heavy arrow setup, I shoot a 32" BOP, 2117 with a 135 grain tip weight.

If I drop down to 125 grains, I have change my brace height.
Blacktail TD Recurve: 66", 42# @ 30". Arrow: 32", 2212. PW: 75 Grains. AW: 421 Grains. GPP: 10.02
Blacktail TD Recurve: 66", 37# @ 30". Arrow: 32", 2212. PW: 75 Grains. AW: 421 Grains. GPP: 11.37

Night Wing - I measure my strike plate at 1/8".

Swamp Yankee

1/8 (short of center) or -1/8 (past center)?
