Hogs Near Rockport,TX
« on: December 01, 2011, 02:27:00 PM »
We will be spending a couple months in Rockport starting about Jan. 15th. I am looking for hog hunting opportunities within say 50 to 75 miles. Looking for information on any WMA's or places with reasonable trespass fee places to hunt. Thanks for any help.

Bill,

I have a place I hunt near Nixon, Texas that has quite a few hogs.  That's about 120 miles from Rockport.

Being that Jan-Feb is the off season, we could easily hunt hogs for a weekend without bothering the other hunters on the lease.

Let me know if you might be interested. We do have a bunk house with electricity and water.

Below is a list of all the Texas Gulf Coast WMA's. Some of them do allow bowhunting.

Thanks for the info Brett and Joe. I appreciate it. Are there many hogs in this area or do I need to look farther inland?

Bill,
I was at the Aransas Wildlife Refuge a couple of years ago, and the hogs were thick. That is very near Rockport. Don't know if you can hunt hogs there in the winter or not, but there are tons of them there. Just watch out for the alligators!

The Aransas Wildlife Refuge is loaded with hogs. But, if you plan on hunting them, bring the most potent deet laden mosquito repellant you can buy. The mosquitoes are more of a problem than the gators.

The saltwater marsh mosquitoes with the tiger striped legs are vicious.            They don't bite, they "stab" and you'll know it when you get hit by one.      :scared:     They're "huge" too and will attempt to carry you off. If they can't carry you off, they'll do their best to drain you of two pints of your blood.

After talking to Texas game and fish, it looks like no WMA's are open for hogs at that time so does anyone know of any pay to hunt places nearby?

Bill:  Jump at the chance to hunt with Brett. He just made you a very special offer. Hunting in Texas is expensive and the places that do offer day hunts are usually hunted hard and most of the game is nocturnal. Dont look a gift horse in the mouth.  RW

I agree,he is right. You need to get with Brett he will know how to hunt hogs on his lease.Do not let the 120 miles scare you. That just a hop skip and a jump in Tx.The wife and I have driven that far just to eat out at times.Hogs on public land are tuff to hunt very nocturnal.Hogs are very high on the smart animal list, higher than deer and they are rutting year round.

What? It's been a few years since I've read the regs but as far as I know the only time these are shut down for hogs is when there is some kind of special deer hunt going on or exotics but if a DFG guy told you that I guess it's correct but doesn't sound right to me. Check your PM's
