First bow ever. Martin Mamba or Hunter.
« on: March 31, 2005, 09:03:00 AM »
Wasnt sure where to post this but here it goes.

So.. Me and my friend are thinking of starting to hunt with bows. Weve been thinking of recurves just for the looks of em and it feels more suitable to us    ;)

We have just listened some advices and form tips from the shop we visited the other day. We held some recurves (cant remember the names though)

Thats about my experience on bows but Ive been reading all sort of things including these boards.

I think that I should buy a good bow right away so that wouldnt kill my enthusiasm for the sport Im feeling right now.

Ive heard that these Martin bows are quite good and I personally like the looks too. And so I think its going to be Mamba or Hunter but the only problem is.. Whats the difference between em? For my untrained eye there arent many differences but I was hoping if you guys could enlighten me on this. And tell me some general things concerning these bows. I mean Ups and Downs kind of things.

Im open to new suggestions too as long as they fall in to the same price catagory    :)

Thanks mates!

The Mamba is 58" long and the Hunter is 62" long. I believe the Mamba is the fastest shooter of the two, If I were  going to by a Martin I would like the Mamba because of it's length and its quickness.

Prefer the Mamba.
If it's in your way, move it.

If you have a shorter draw length 27-28" then the 58" Mamba would be perfect. The 62" Hunter would be smoother for longer draw lengths. Both bows are excellent choices but for me personally, I prefer the shorter bows. More compact, easy to manuever, better suited for ground hunting. I also believe both bows sell for about the same price.

Because I have a long draw (30")I would go with the longer Hunter over the Mamba

I've had the Mamba, the Hunter, and just about every other martin bow out there. The ones that lasted were the warthog (I think it was... I donated to fund raiser) and then wound up with a Hatfield... Heavy and sweet.

The traditional bows all in my case blew up on me and who knows why (31" draw)but Martin is the greatest to work with in fixin things up.

I shoot only the longbows now and have the Viper as a go to bow now. The Venom should be just like it... pretty quick and very stable.

Much Aloha...

Which bow you would buy may depend on your draw length.  I wouldn't be to concerned about which bow shoots "harder hitting, faster" or anything like that.  At 40# draw or about, they will both have complete pass throughs with arrows.  The question for hunting then would be which bow would be smoother and easy to draw.

I'm 6" 5" with a longer draw.  So, I bought the hunter.  It doesn't stack for me, which I like.

I have a 30" draw and would go with the hunter. Also it has been my experience that the weight marked on the bow is often lighter than the actual draw weight with Martins.

Love my Mamba, but as others have said,, your draw length might determine which you prefer. I draw 27."

I haven't had a Mamba, but I sure love my Hunter.  I have a 30" draw, and the bow is smooth as silk.
