Longbow VS Recurve
« on: December 09, 2011, 06:56:00 PM »
I have always been told that a recurve will shoot faster than a long bow, assuming they are of equal draw weight.. Is this true?

Not in the last few years.
There a lot of longbows out there these days that will shoot right along with most any recurve.

All depends on the bow itself, whether or not it is a R/D design and what limb materials has a lot to do with bow performance.

So,I have a 45lb Savannah which is R/D,,and I was thinking of getting a 45 Grizzly..was wondering if the recurve would be quicker.

I agree with the above.  I also think we make too much of speed.  Sure, it needs to go a certain speed, but I think all bows out there achieve it, some with lotsa room to spare.

You can also hear that longbows are lighter than recurves, and quieter than recurves.  yadda yadda

I'd say on average, the recurve would be faster if you compared a truckload of each.

Now you got me thinking about dragging out the chronograph!

Shoot what is more accurate for you and forget about speed. The 5-15 fps is useless if you are solely target shooting anyhow.

If you are hunting and cant hit a deer, it doesn't matter if you miss by an 4 inches at 200 FPS or by an inch at 150 FPS.

Both types of Bows Kill deer every year. Both bows you mentioned are
more than adequate to get the job done.
Keep it fun.

Most deer don't notice a few FPS.  Field craft kills faster than most bows.

Nope it won't, if you could draw the Savannah as far as the recurve the Savannah may just win!

I have both, and have found that both are similiar. I actually get a little better (4fps) performance with my longbow than the recurve. Both same #.

damm the speed! sharp head, heavey arrow = quiet bow, dead deer.5 or 8 fps aint no big deal.as far as the two bows you mention the longbow would be quicker in this case .those bows do sling a arrow pretty quick.

Yes.  But there are few longbows anymore (though LOTS of flatbows, many with reflex/deflex built in).     :D

When was the last time you saw someone with a bow as long as they are tall that was straight when unstrung?

If you have the top of the line recurve takedown that has good mass weight and agressive limbs it could shoot over 200 fps. Now, if you have a Hill style longbow and you shoot the HIll style and your draw sets a little shorter like most others that shoot that fluid bent arm style you would be doing good if your bow with the same arrow was with in 25 fps of the takedown recurve.  Then you are sneaking around, sort of hunting, and an elk, a deer or a turkey jumps into the clearing and gives you less than 3 second to shoot, which bow is faster?

Of the performance r/d longbows vs recurves I've owned the recurves were faster and flatter shooting in the 58-62" category of lengths, and I didn't need a chronograph to know it.. I don't shoot short r/d longbows or longbows less than 64" anymore. Only because I can't shoot them consistently, speed doesn't concern me. Well, not anymore I only shoot recurves now   :)

The Savannah is a sweet bow, and plenty fast enough to get the job done. And, as others have suggested, it very well might be faster than a Grizz - the Savannah is definitely quick. But ultimately, speed is only part of the equation. Shoot the bow you shoot best.

(And in my totally biased opinion, I'd take a Savannah over a new Grizzly any day, for a number of reasons).
