Late season turks?
« on: December 13, 2011, 05:12:00 PM »
This time of year I'm usually chasing ducks or trying to put one more deer in the freezer but the last 2 weekends I have watched a large group of toms take the same path. On the opposite ridge the hens have been talking from fly down til the time I leave. I have a couple questions.

First, Is a decoy going to help me much in the fall?

Second, I know a blind would be the best bet but deer are still on the menu too and this is a wide open area with large mature oaks. I'm not sure I could get my turkey blind hidden enough to suit me for a deers eyes also. What do you think would be the best bet leafy suit or blind?

Rob,

I haven't tried decoying for birds in the fall, but it couldn't hurt to try and see. As far as the blind is concerned, if you're seeing them from the tree and deer are still, "on the menu", I'd stay above them TURKS.

In my limited fall turkey experience I have noticed that they are not as likely as a deer to look up at the stand.....I guess my thinking is "death from above"....LOL!

Just to share a recent turkey story with you and for an example I had 19 within 20 yards while I was up in a stand about a week ago.... Unfortunately for my being too lazy to bring the bow I only had a smokepole and watched the birds taunt me for about 45 minutes several times well within bow range, but alas NO BOW!!! I guess that's what I get for being a slacker.

Good luck and make sure to post a pic of that bird when you stick it. Hope to see you and the other folks from the 2011 SIDH soon, I miss all you guys and gals.

Thanks John. I'm ready for next years SIBH also. Maybe some of us can put together a hunt sooner than that.

Have taken 1/2 dozen hens in the fall using dekes.

I do not use then when pursueing gobs in the fall. Have an acquaintance that has taken gobs with dekes in the fall. He has had much success using dekes with extremely long beards that were made from horse tails.
