Bucket Brigade
« on: December 15, 2011, 11:19:00 PM »
Tom Porter and I went up to see Terry, Tracy and Charlie when they hunted northern Missouri this fall. After they hunted Saturday night we went to town for pizza. We met a young man at the Pizza hut that was very enthused about hunting and we talked with him for awhile. He told us that his dad told him to always take a bucket with him and set it where the deer would present the best shot. Fast forward to this evenings hunt. I had several small items to take with me, so I loaded them in a 2 1/2 gallon white bucket. I didn't want to leave it by my stand so I went about 25 yards and hid it under a cedar tree. About an hour and a half later I had a small buck coming in and when he was about 30 yards away he stopped and fixed his eyes on the bucket hidden under the tree. Unfortunately the bucket was behind me and if I moved he would see my movements. He stuck around for 25 minutes and got within 12 yards, but kept thinking and looking at the bucket. Never gave me a shot, but the next time I sit I'm taking that bucket with me, except it's going on the otherside of the trail. Hopefully when the deer come thru they'll concentrate on the bucket and they'll face away from me. I'll let you know if it works. Maybe that youngster knew a valuble trick after all!
I would've taken better care of myself,if I'd known I was gonna live this long!

another good trick from the old days is those little transistor radios. turn it on so you can barely here it and set it about 20 yards out. for some reason this brings white tails in looking for the sound. My grand dad did this a lot . he also killed a lot of deer.

yep, the curosity of the deer.  I used the deer curiosity the other night to harvest one.  We all know deer live and die by there nose, but when they see something different, that is non threatening, they have to find out what it is to give them a peace of mind.  Nephew and I had deer across field from us.  I couldn't call them in, so as last resort, I stood slowly, and one seen me.  She came all way across field, there was a thicket she couldn't get my wind and walked right down field, to try and figure out, then turned and shot her.  Be careful, have done the bucket type trick a time or two and if deer really pressured will blow and run off, but worth a shot.
