Lighter Carbon Arrow Setup for EFOC?
« on: December 21, 2011, 05:39:00 PM »
I'm sure this topic has been discussed many times in the past, but I'm new to Tradgang so will ask it again.  I've just ordered a custom recurve with specs of 58# at 28".  My draw is 29.5", so this puts me in the 62-63# range.  I'm looking to put together an arrow that's as close to 550 grains as possible and would like to have my FOC over 20%.  Does anyone have experience with a similar setup or have suggestions?  I've had good experience with Carbon Express in the past, and am also curious about Bemans, but am really open to any suggestions.  Thanks

It is fairly simple,  use as small a fletch as you can and put as much weight as you can up front.   Once you know the arrow spine you need do a web search to find the lightest shaft in that spine.  Plan to get max weight up
front.   I would foot the carbon up front to increase
front end weight  and shaft durability.  An arrow shaft  that weighs 6.4 to 7 grains per inch is what your looking for.  The lower the better.

There are a lot of ways to get the weight up front.   Heavy heads are the best option for getting the weight as far forward as possible.  Heavy inserts or adapters also work.

How far your bow is cut past or from center will determine what spine shaft you need.   Most folks are way overspined with their carbons.   I shoot 600 spine Easton Epics with 400 grains up front out of a 55 lb R/D longbow.   The arrows weigh 564 grains and have 29% FOC.  Everyone says they are spined to light.   Plane tuning and perfect broadhead flight to 40 yards says otherwise.   I use low profile shield cut fletch in a 3 inch - 4 fletch pattern.  This set up gives excellent  broad head control with little weight on the back of the shaft.  I use 300 grain field points with aluminum inserts and aluminum footings.   For broadheads I use Grizzly El Grandes and Steel Adapters to get the 300 grains.

Beman shafts are made by Easton Archery.  Look at their Epic and Axis lines as well as the other shafts available on the market.

What you're looking to do will not be hard at all.  You're probably going to be in the range of a .300 spine carbon...add a 250 grain point and you'll probably be exactly where you want.

I like Carbon Express shafting, Easton/Beman are also very good shafts.

gold tip ultralight 300's with about 250 up front start full length and trim to tune. Amount of center shot may need different point weight.

I think to get that weight you will need a 340-350 spine and a very light shaft. The lightest will likely be a Victory V Force HV in .350 spine.

I shoot them cut 30" for 53# and use 430 grs up front-insert,point and footing,total weight,655 grs.

For your 10 lb heavier bow, deduct 50 grs point weight.Add 2" of shaft length(32")deduct 50 grs point weight. This gives you a 560 gr arrow with 330 grs point/insert weight.Of course you have to see what point weight works for you.

The Victory V Force HV shafts seem to need a little more point weight than a closely spined, say,Gold Tip.That's not a bad thing. They are also 6.7 GPI and .287 diam. The slimmer diameter probably contributes to needing more point weight.A 2013 aluminum will work for a footing but it is snug(9 GPI).They take standard .246 inserts and nocks.

Another great arrow for this is the A/D nitro stinger yellow.
TGMM-Family of the Bow

The quest to improve is so focused on a few design aspects & compensating for hunter ineptness as to actually have reduced a bow & arrow’s effectiveness. Nothing better demonstrates this than mech. BHs & speed fixated designs

I believe the bow will be cut 3/16 past center and with the strike plate added back in will be about 1/8 past center.  Correct me if I'm wrong.  That equates to needing a little more stiffness right?

That depends what you are comparing it to.Most of my bows are cut about the same. The deeper in it is cut,the stiffer the spine needed.

Beman MFX 400 HIT with 75- 100 grain inserts 150-175 grain head.Super strong arrows and shoot good even on windy days with there small diameter.Best in my opinion. They can take some serious abuse.

Thanks everyone for the advice.  Now I'll just anxiously await my new bow so I can start tinkering.

I have a bow that is #54 at my draw of 28 1/4" cut 3/16 past center and one that is #63 at my draw cut center. Neither one of these bows like a .340 Beman MFX or 3Rivers Trad only shafts, way too stiff.

I cut mt arrows 29.5" and play with point weight.
The .340 Trads are full length and even with 300-350 grains up front they are too stiff.

I think you would be much better starting off with 400's but everyone and every bow is different.

My #54 bow shoots Beman MFX 500's cut 29" with 250 grains up front real nice, haven't paper tuned those to prove it but my broadheads and field point impact the same and I don't see any issues in flight.
Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils.

I like the Victory Vforce Hv's for sure. I have an ilf riser and 2 sets of recurve limbs, weights come in at around 52@28, I draw 28.5". Any way, the bow likes full length 300 spined shafts with a 100 gr insert, 200gr broadhead, 4" fletch... 27% foc. I have a longbow that pulls the same weight and it likes the 350's set up the same way.
