Getting old tape off of fiberglass?
« on: December 24, 2011, 04:42:00 PM »
I just bought a great 1961 "factory camo" Bear Grizzly from a fellow tradganger.

It has 2 strips of very old clear tape on the limbs.

It's no big deal because I knew of the old tape before I bought it and you can hardly see it, but someone much have taped a quiver on it years back.

It appears to be like a scotch tape. It's so old that the tape is almost fused into the glass.

It's no big deal if I can't remove it, but is there anything I could use other than maybe trying hot soapy water, that won't damage the glass or the "paint" of the factory camo?

I won't try anything that could potentially damage the bow.

Thanks in advance.

Goof Off or WD40 will probably get the tape residue off.  It won't hurt the fiberglass, but I'd test it on an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it doesn't soften up the old paint.

I use GooGone or GoofOff with good results.

I used some Goo Gone Extreme spray on a 72 Bear Kodiak Hunter that I bought that someone had sprayed camo paint on the limbs.  Worked great and didn't hurt the finish at all.  I have also used the liquid orange Goo Gone, and it didn't hurt the finish on anything I have ever used it on either.  Let it soak a bit before you try to wipe it off, works better that way.

I tried the goof off on a tiny spot on the side of the limb and it took the paint right off.

I fixed it with an olive drab marker and it's fine. It was only 1/16th of an inch.

I think I'm just going to let it be.
