Shot-out 3D boar targets
« on: July 19, 2007, 10:29:00 AM »
I recently refurbished a shot-out 3D boar target and was extremely happy with the results.  (will post pics this weekend)....

being that I mainly hunt boars I'd like to stock my practice area with a handful of different boars.  If anyone has any shot-out boars I'd like to purchase them and try to give them a new life.  Please send me a PM if you can help.

Terry,  couldn't find a classified section that applied to post this in.  Hope it's ok....100% personal use.

Has anyone tried making a homemade 3D mold from a dead hog or something else?  My taxidermist uses an expandable foam to make rocks and such....If I had a form I could pour me a whole herd of boars....ANY IDEAS???  :help:

Maybe a form made of 2X8's with plywood bottom, fill with plaster paris and lay half of the 3-D target in to get imprint.  Lay opposite side in 2nd form.

After form is complete, put 2 halves together tightly with starps, drill hole in top and fill with foam.  Would have to grease the inside so when you remove straps the target would seperate.

Just an idea, have never tried myself but would be an interesting project.

I did make some plywood hogs one time with hole cut out for vital and covered with black felt, attached rebar behind legs to push in ground.

A good shot would blow right thru felt, bad shot would stick in or blow thru plywood.

They were fun and lasted awhile.

The plasterwill probably break with the size of a boar unless you reinforce it well.  That foam has tremendous pressure when sealed up.  If not well sealed then it will be soft and arrows will blow right thru.

This boar was almost completely shot out....we used 1 can of expandable foam.....kept pressing the wet foam inside the torn hole and pushed the foam tube deeper inside the boar....I've put a lot of rounds in it since and it is holding up GREAT!....Foam under $5 and paint about $4...

We did have to cut the huge tumor off the boar on one side that developed once the foam dried, but a steak knife worked great!
