Muddy Outdoor sticks??
« on: January 01, 2012, 08:02:00 PM »
I need some info on these climbing sticks. I have had several sets of Lone Wolf sticks over the years and they are good ones. I have neither a Muddy or LW stand and am planning on using sticks next year on public land with a Treesuit next season. I like the size of the Muddy sticks but wonder if I can get up 16 or so feet with em. The size seems like they would fit better strapped to my pack without a lot of overhang.

LW minis are 17".  Muddys are 20".  My only hesitancy with the new muddy products is the rope and cam.  They still have you tie it off after the cam so I do not see the advantage to just tying it off without a cam.  I may change my mind one day, but those cams seem really questionable to me with ice or mud etc.  Trusting my life to a pivoting cam does not feel good.  I would rather just tie rope or use the LW straps.

Thats one of the things I like about the Muddy's. less metal to make noise. I would really like to try a set. Anyone in central Ohio have em?

I have muddy sticks that I've used all season so far, I really really like them! If you stretch them out on the tree you can get 18ft maybe. It's really nice when you find a tree with a lot of branches you can use as steps, doing this I have gotten well over 20ft. I love my muddy sticks and stand, very easy, fast and quiet to use!

I considered the muddy sticks. That's until I seen they were made in china. LW is made in USA. They were made in china for short time but brought production back due to quality issues. Here lately I've been looking for domestic made goods. Just my 2 cents.

Heydeer- I agree. . . on first thought.  But, that is kind of my point- if a guy wants, whether muddy or LW, he can just tie them on- we have done it for years.  And since Muddy wants you to tie them after the cam- why even use the cam?

After trying varied systems over the years I (and some of my comrades) have concluded that after felting the buckles to "zero" noise- those LW straps are still the quickest and easiest with one hand. Just my 2C. . .  Good luck.  I do hope to hear more in the future how the Muddy cam system works out.  I am still very wary of ice and such on the mechanism.

Good hunting

The cam/rope idea looks great, but scary.. The pivots (Screws) for the cam are unsupported on both ends, consequently they are subject to bending or breaking.. Either case the rope slips.. I am guessing that is why they have to tie it off..

If you can live with that,, I think they look great.

I do wonder what happens when coming down in the dark you step on the left peg with your right foot  etc..

Coming down in the dark and transitioning from one stick to another is always an issue with me.
