Heavy hauler camping packs?
« on: January 06, 2012, 01:27:00 PM »
I posted something similar earlier; however I need further recommendations. I need something to be able to haul extreme cold weather bibs and coats, 3 sets of base layers, socks, camera, toiletries, pac boots etc.

Also looking to use later on for backpack style hunting

Do yall prefer internal or external frame packs. Based on recommendations from people so far I have narrowed my choices to

Osprey Argon 115 (internal)

Kelty Trekker 65 (external)

I really just want to go ahead and get a kuiu pack but not enough money for that.

I have a Lowe 75+15 internal frame it works ok, but I have been looking for a camp trails expedition (external frame), a friend has one, you can use different bags on it, one part tunes into a day pack and you can use the frame to haul animals, They are not made any more and it seems people are not selling used ones very often.  I have tried the Kelty Cache hauler, but only in store, feel pretty good (a little worried about the suspension system). Are you hauling just cloths and stuff or maybe animals? internal work great for clothes, sleeping bag and rolls, etc.  but If you may require animal hauling external frame is the way to go. go to  http://s1085.photobucket.com/albums/j435/Tloran/Goat%20hunting%20in%20BC/  to see pics of my pack.
here are a couple others you might want to look at.

REI XT-85 is a real comfortable internal frame pack as well.

I'm a big fan of external frames, the options are endless. Either lashing a day hunting pack on it and all my camping gear for a spike came or just a heavy meat hauler, they are in my opinion they are the best all around. Internal frames are nice, but not as versital, you have what you have. Older Dwight schuh frame packs were nice because they had a top large sack and a bottom fanny pack that can be taken off for packing out, the redhead spike camp looks similar without the other compartments. Better yet get a bison gear lost river and a Molle frame off an auction site or something. Best of both worlds.

Most important of all is the suspension system, check out the suspension system on the camp-trails link. I have an adjustable torso on my pack, wear it in the store with some weight on it, try to step up and down steps with it on, check out shifting, bouncing and strain on you back.  The belt should be snug over your hips, should straps start at the nape of you neck but over on your blades a little. chest strap should be mid pecs.  I would never buy a pack without trying it on and testing some of these things. If you are odering from the internet, see if there is someone (tradgang) member with a pack in your are so you can try it first.

Eberlestock has plenty of options from lightweight to full haulers.. I would look there. Love my Just One Pack. Compacts down to about 1200 but then expands to around 7800 with a super duffel pack. It has an internal frame, molle system for countless accessory attachments, fits a 3 liter water bag, and a huge open net area for airflow during meat transportation. One of the nice things is that it comes with a lifetime warranty as well. They are a bit expensive but as long as you use as intended there is no reason to buy another.

Don't buy more pack than you need especially if this is your first one.  I like something smaller, like a 3500 cubic inch/60 liter pack. Clothing can be lashed on and it'll keep you more mobile if you decide to backpack hunt.
Take a kid hunting!
