Never knowing what the steel is in the files, I usually just work with steels I know the quenching & tempering parameters.  With that said, I have enjoyed forging a few with the file makes left in them.  Here's a little neck knife...though nowhere near as pretty as yours nockhunter.  Doc

I've also made a couple out of files.  The older the files the better.  Newer ones are case hardened and won't make a good knife.

I like to use nicklson files, I think they are 1095 steel. Stay away from the China files.

Thanks for the compliments.

I really like that Tanto!  What wood did you use for the handle and sheath?  Maple?

Mighty nice indeed. I've recently begun experimenting with making knives from files.

So far, all I've managed to do is ruin my magnet....      :banghead:

The tanto blade knife is maple I got from Home Depot, just ordinary maple in the rack. I rough cut the anealed files with a power shear. Then I used a belt sander to get a rough outline and rough shape then into the heat treat. The pic makes the blades look dull, they are very shiny.
