Rules at 3d shoots for side plates

Some shoots state shoot off shelf, and some state shelf or stick on rest. Was wondering is there a certain restriction for side plates.

The only side plate restriction I've ever encountered at a 3D shoot pertains to the height of the side plate material above the arrow. In the IBO traditional class, the side plate can only extend 1 inch above the arrow. Seems someone figured out that if they made the side plate tall enough, they could use the top edge similar to a sight pin.
