break in period for a new string

I was shooting today and my string broke.I think it should have lasted a lot longer than it did by I won't cry over spilled milk.I'm going to get another tomorrow.Here is the dilemna though,I'm going on a bear hunt in maine in about a month.Do you think I'll have enough time to break-in the new string?Any suggestions(besides the one where I should have had a back up long ago,lol.)?

50-100 arrows is usually enough for me to get my string "shootable"... I can do that in one afternoon. While you're at it, buy 2 and shoot both in. One for go and one for backup.

I highly recommend Chad @   primetimestrings.com  , best strings on the market, imho.

Thanks JC,I'll check him out.If you got the time do you have any suggestions on where to start?I fooled around with the nock point and brace height on the last with very limited instruction(hadn't found this site yet,lol.)I got it to hit fairly good.May have been luck.Thanks

I should also mention I have been doing this a long time an never had a string break, check your bow for any sharp edges near the nocks and string groove. I have shot some strings for 5-6 years and thousands upon thousands of shots. Shawn

Gary, if you are concerned about setup and aren't really sure, I would suggest starting your tuning after the string is shot in and retune the arrows from scratch (with silencers and the nock point you plan to use attached on the string). A search on here for arrow tuning will give you 1000 posts to read, or visit OL Adcock's website to learn more.

Holler if you need more detail, I'm sure we can all contribute to getting your arrows flying the way you want.

Shawn's right, usually a string won't break unless it's been abused (nicked, cut etc.) or there is something on the bow's nocks causing an abrasion. Discard a string if it gets nicked or if it becomes so frayed it looks "fuzzy". Periodic string waxing will prolong the life quite a bit.

Good advice from JC...and like Shawn said,check you string groove....I had a burr in one on an old bow...didn't know it till my string broke!!!!

I did wax the string at least once sometimes twice a week.I did notice the serving around the loop(I have an endless string) was starting to fray and slightly separate.So my next question if I find a rough spot on the nock groove do I jut lightly polish it out with some finr sandpaper or what?Thanks.

I looked at the nocks and string groove just a litle bit ago couldn't feel any burrs or sharp edges.The wife told me the cat had taken an interest in the string silencer on there a few days ago.........hmmmmmm!
   Anyway,any suggestions on how many strands I should get?My bear grizzly recurve has an AMO length of 58".The strings I've looked at so far have run the gamut from 10 strands to 18.Decisions,decisions.

If the string broke in the loop, then the bow nock is suspect... the culprit may not be visible.

Take a small piece of 220 grit garnet paper and roll it up nice and tight so it is the same size as the nock. Lightly sand the nock. all around but especially at the point where the break occured... you should be able to figure that out.

After sanding, finish it with a small hunk of 0000 steel wool. Twist it up into a sort of string and work it back and forth in the nock.

If it didn't break in the nock... shoot the cat!!

Thanks Charlie.I just read the tuning process at O.L. Adcock's sight.Seems pretty simple and straight forward.Now if I can get broke in and tuned in time for my bear hunt.I was thinking if I can hit a cat's vitals at twenty yards a bear should be no problem,lol.Hope my wife never reads this.

gjw77 Check the nock with a cotton ball drag the cotton ball in the nock if you get a snag you found the problem and clean it up as said.
