Hand shock how to fix it?
« on: January 31, 2012, 07:47:00 PM »
I am shooting an AMF hawk at 40#s shooting a 505gn easton MFX 500 shaft at 30"s. Shoots good but it has a lot of hand shock on the release. I also shoot 3 under with a 1/2" nock high.Is there something else I can do to help this. And does anybody know what the brace height would be on this bow?  Thanks Mike

Try playing with the brace height, sorry I don't know what it should be.

Is this an older recurve? Probably wasn't tillered for 3 under. The tiller of the bow may be reason you are feeling handshock.Dacron strings can make felt handshock seem more.I always prefer an endless loop dacron on my older recurves.Silencers on a dacron string sometimes can increase handshock on some bows. You might also try raising your nock height alittle at a time. Are you shooting off the shelf? If so maybe try shooting off an elevated rest and reset your nocking point.Hard to say on brace height,I would try around 7.5" and move up or down from there.Just some suggestions, but I would only try one thing at a time and see if it improves.

I believe it should almost be a 8 inch brace height. Take it to a 8.25 brace shoot 3 arrows and see then go down in height after ech set of 3 till it starts shaking again then go back to last brace height best to do with no quiver on in good luck

Handshock is caused be inefficient limb energy usage.  There are two things that can help.  One is trapping the limbs.  I would not recommend it on a light bow.  You  will lose weight.  The other is to use a heavier arrow.  Increasing the brace height will quiet the bow.  Move up the brace height in 1/4" increments until it quiets down.  Dick

I imagine the bow was tillered for a split grip. Try shooting it with a split finger grip and see if that helps. If it does, you need to raise the nock height. If it shoots too low after that, build up the arrow rest to raise the impact point.

I'm not familiar with that bow, but if it will accept an HMPE string ("Fast Flight"--Dynaflight, 8125G, etc.) that will generally tame shock.  With arrows over 12.5 gpp, it shouldn't have much--I'd check the tiller--may be something wrong.
