everything I need?

I'm getting ready to order my first trad. bow, and I was wondering if I could get some good opinions on what I'm planning on ordering.

I was looking at a Samick Sage package on 3 Rivers. It includes a cheaper quiver, finger glove, restringer, etc.

Gonna start with 40lb limbs because I have a 27" DL, so I believe that will be less than 40lbs.

I need to know what else I need to order and which arrows I should try to look into. I was going to start with Carbon arrows, but I will be shooting off the shelf, so I need to know what kind of fletching. Feathers, vanes, what? What else do I need? Nock point, pliers, material for the shelf? Do I need a bow square? I need a good beginner list.

Welcome to the gang.  If you plan on bow hunting in Oklahoma the minimun draw weight for hunting is 40 lbs.  Just something you might want to consider. If you ever get to Cheyenne, Ok. look me up.

I noticed that about the 40 lbs for hunting. If I get a 40lb bow, and my draw length is 27" on a compound, am I ok since the weight will actually be lower than 40?

Here is my take / I would buy a 45 lb bow of a good make or used from the classifids here. Id also buy a good quality quiver. you:ll most likley be a 28" draw without your release. Just my 2 cents but I would get a 45 lb bow.

If the 40 lb is accurate, you will get about 38 at 27".  Arrows will need feathers.  The carbon shooters here will be more help with arrows.  One thing I will recommend is TJ Conrads book, "The Traditional Bowhunter's Handbook".  Tons of good info and a great reference.  You might be able to pick one up thru the classifieds.

I would suggest you find someone who shoots tradtional archery close by that has a 45 lb bow they would let you shoot. Good luck. If you ever get to Cheyenne I have 3 bows in the 45 lb range you could try.

In order to hunt in your state you'll need a bow of 40# or more.
  The sage is a decent starter bow, and if 40# is too much for you right now, you could always start out with lighter limbs and upgrade later. That kit looks like a great way to get started. If you have the opportunity to try out some gear before making your purchase, by all means Do It! However if that's not an option, don't be afraid to pick any of the options on that list. You'll gradually make changes to your gear as you progress, its inevitable. You'll need to know your draw weight to figure out what spine arrows you'll need. Beman and Gold Tip would be my first two picks for carbon shafts, I wouldn't worry too much about brand for now, but you need to make sure the arrows are the correct spine and have feathers not plastic fletching.

I have only drawn on trad bows a couple of times, but I knew the other day when I did it that it was time to do this. I had an epiphany about my bowhunting, and the stars aligned. I can't explain it, but I just knew it was time to go traditional.

I went to Bass Pro because that was the only place that I knew of that carried any traditional archery stuff. The only other shop near me (25 min away) looked at me funny when I asked. Anyway, I chose a PSE recurve set at 45lbs, but I was drawing less with a shorter DL. I thought it may have been a little too heavy, so I decided to go to 40lb limbs. I only draw 60lbs with a compound, so I figured that this was a good move. I want to try as many bows as I can, but I have been told that there are only a couple of traditional shops within an hour and half of my house in OK. I'm hoping I can find plenty of shooters around here at OJAM, so that I can find more choices to pick from and find what will work best. I appreciate the offer on the bows. I would love to try them out.

I would expect that after you've had a 40# bow for less than a week that you will be seriously wishing you had spent your money on a bow with a heavier draw weight.

A bow with a 45# draw weight is legal, you'll have a wider range of arrows that you can use and you won't feel the least bit over bowed.

I'm 61 with a small frame and I have had a lot of left hand and right shoulder problems including surgeries.   It doesn't take massive amounts of strength to draw anything up to 50#'s and I can shoot heavier, but I usually stay within the mid-40s for all my adventures.

Start at 45#.
