Middle of the night ideas...here's one of mine.
« on: February 06, 2012, 10:44:00 AM »
Todd (Lovethehunt) had a post yesterday about making arrow footings, and it got me to researching and thinking.  Well, I got up @ 2 AM this morning with a sick little boy, took care of him got him back to sleep, but I couldn't go back to sleep myself, so to the drawing board I went.

I kissed my wife goodbye, and went to work a couple hrs early so that nobody would be there to bother me, and here is the first test with my prototype jig.  I will soon be making a more permanent one instead of using plywood.

Now if I can just figure an easier way to remove the stock from the footing once it is fled on, I will be golden.  I have used a handplane in the past, but there has got to be an easier way.  Anyone have an idea I can run with???

Let everyone know how the footings go for strength, I've had bad luck with them being weaker than a std cedar.  I'm in process of footing ash on cedars with the arrow fix tool with hopes it actually adds strength. I'll post results as well.

Nice Mike! I've been doing the 2 point for a while and love the strength it gives, not to mention they look good. As for getting the excess off, I've been thinking of an easier way to do it as well. The plane works, but is a pain, and can be uneven if I don't pay attention.

I'm thinking of using a disc sander.  Got to put a few things to paper and practicality and I'll post back my findings, but this is actually a pretty simple project to put together.  I'm now 1/2 way there.

How about a jig and a router?

Thought about that too Tim, but I think I'm going to go a different avenue.

Looks like a good footing.  Did you follow Jason Wesbrock's jig plans in the How To section? Been thinking of making one of those myself.

His how-to gave me some of the guidelines, but the driving force behind it was Steve O.  He kept telling me I could figure it out.  Well, he got me to thinking and I'm 1/2 way there now.  Sometimes, all it takes is a little motivation from friends.

Then after seeing Todd post that he had done it, I was awake with nothing to do, and that is never a good thing for me, so I listened to that little steve o on my shoulder saying "You Can Do It", not unlike that guy from The Water Boy.

Here is a good starting point Tim.  Use this as a reference for your own jig.

Nice job Mike.   I can't wait to see how this turns out!  This is something that I'd love to know how to do... correctly.
