Just reminiscing
«
on:
February 17, 2012, 12:15:00 PM »
When my grandfather took me to the squirrel woods but this time I did the shooting.
When I was hunting on my wifes uncles place and saw a solid black doe.
When my son Kevin had a HUGE droptine eleven pointer step out of the corn and he stuttered bi..bi..big deer for five minutes without raising his bow.
When the same son and I took his oldest son trout fishing and the boy fell out of the boat into the Dix river.
Good good times!

When I helped my oldest son trail his first archery killed deer....
When I was too young to drive and Dad would take me out into the country to get straw bales to use as a backstop in our back yard...
Hearing my first elk bugle.....
Early, simple, days spent archery hunting with Bob, Art, Mick, Chuck, Dad, Larry, Dick, some of whom have passed on......
Good topic and good memories all!

A campfire, on the banks of the Tombigbee, with all the old gang.
The cold nose of my "Red Dogs", some now gone, in the tent of that same River.
The jump of the heart, or catch of a breath, when your arrow is in flight.
The sight of my Bride, bow in hand stalking the river swamp, and knowing all is good.
Solomon, my mule, and Kuri, my red dog, to keep me company.
My son home from the war, and ready to hunt.

When either going hunting or going to work was an easy choice.
When I had one bow and that's all I shot.
When my kids ask if they can try and pull my bow back.
When I'm sitting here reading all these great posts without my Boss knowing.
Good times one and all.

Me on my horse, trying to get lost.
Me on my first camping hunt. Rehanging my muffler twice in the sleet on logging roads who knows where. Pup tent, sterno stove, frozen water jug, frost in my hair when I sat up in the predawn.
My first deer, hand loaded 270, needing help to drag it. A silly 1.5 yo buck. Sillier me.
First bow kill. Massive gratitude. Prayers of same.

Killing a spike 2 1/2 miles from the road in the Adirondacks all by myself.....and then getting it out alone.
Getting my first shot a deer with my Browning Nomad [ a 4 point ] and missing clean in 1971,cedar arrow with a Bear razorhead.
My first Elk hunt last fall with Charlie [Cyclic Rivers on here], great time.
40 years hunting from the same camp in the north country.......priceless

My first bow kill, this beautiful animal laying at my feet and the remorse I felt along with the joy of accomplishment. A very private time and glad I was alone.

My Grandfather teaching me to squirrel hunt, then deer hunt, teaching me to fish, and teaching me the necessity and rewards of a hard days work. He taught me to be honest at all times no matter what the cost. Most importantly all through the years growing up he taught me to love the Lord Jesus with all my heart, soul and strength. I lost Grandpa this last Friday Feb 10. He went home to be with the Lord, but I will never forget any time I had with him because they were all good times.

First live deer I ever saw; a 5-point- Ben Pearson Cougar and a Bear Razorhead made him mine.
My son putting an arrow in my hat I laid on a trail opening day of his first deer hunt -- an hour before his killed his first deer standing in almost the exact spot.
My little brother's full-size alarm clock going off in his tree stand seat circ 1975.
My now deceased brother getting down from his stand too early, throwing up, and a nice little buck walking under the tree a few minutes after he left.

My grandpa sitting on a stump telling me to be quiet or the squirrels wouldn't come out. He shooting a rabbit with a bolt action 410 , and telling me to wait until the dogs "worried" it for minute.
I shot a bluejay in a plumb orchard, and I wondered how I could get it off the shaft.

Thanks for the sharing folks............. now I'm melancholy..lol

When I was the only one at the shooting day of my hunter safety course with a trad bow (bear recurve) and I put 5 for 5 in the bull after the instructor ripped my flipper rest off because it was upside down. I was 12. How happy was I?
Wish I still shot that well.
