Long draw wood arrow shooters?
« on: February 20, 2012, 05:33:00 PM »
How many of you wood arrow shooters shoot arrows over 30" BOP.  And what length do you shoot?

I have to shoot full length 32" arrows with my field tips. my draw length is almost 31 1/2". When I draw my broadheads, the arrow comes to touch my riser just before settling in. almost too close for comfort, therefore I shoot AD's for hunting.

Try bamboo, you can get shafts up to 39 inches long and 90lbs in spine.

I do, they are 31" BOP. I had Snag make some beautiful arrows that are 75-80lb and 11/32 Surewoods. (douglas fir)

I'm forced to shoot full length. With a 32 draw a full shaft gives me just enough room for my broadheads.

When I shot woodies from a curve with a 31" draw I used footed shafts for some extra lenght.

I sure want to try some woods, but not sure exactly which kind would work good with a 31" draw length and 62 lbs ff out of my longbow.

A standard shaft is to short for broadheads.I buy footings by "Reparrow" they are very easy to add to arrow and get what length you need.very strong.

A standard wood shaft these days is 32" full length.  The nock will give you about 1/8 inch and if I short taper the point just a bit, I can usually get 31 1/4 inch BOP.  Any longer than that requires a footing of some sort.  I've also had pretty good luck and service from the Reparrows.  There are some advantages to being a short guy with a 26" draw.   :D

I have a 32" draw, so I put a reparrow footing on my woodies.  They work very well.  Raptor archery can also make footed arrows for folks with a long draw length.

My draw is 29+, I leave them full length, a bit hanging out don't hurt anything and keeps the broadhead away from my hand!

Full length for me as well. You have to figure out what weight head your gonna shoot so you can estimate the increased spine weight of the shafts, full length means no room for adjusting. The test kit is the best bet for getten it correct the first time.

I make arrows from poplar dowells   They come  36 inches or 48 inches ( In some stores )   48 incher's are ALWAYS  tough to straighten and mostly junk . 36 inchers you have to  really pick  through the pile  but I have made many a good arrow out of poplar dowells ( 3/8") is the diameter  But I taper the nock end to 11/32  and cut of the front to length   Gives a nice FOC arrrow .

Bringing this back up, what kind of point weight and FOC are y'all looking at.  Got form sorted out today and have a 30.25" DL.  Arrows I'm looking at are showing 7.2 FOC with 125 grain tips, which is what I would like to keep so I can stay at about 180-185 fps, but the low FOC worries me.
