Target Burn on Wood arrows ?
« on: February 26, 2012, 04:30:00 PM »
It seems I remember seeing something about preventing target burn on wood shafts. But I don't remember what it was. I have some surewood arrows with profin sealer. They get target burn from my 3d targets. What do you do to prevent this. Does superglue prevent it?
Thanks
Jeff

I had the same problem several years ago when I last made up some woods.  Bummed me out and I abandoned the exercise.  Too much effort to make em cool looking to have em black and brown in the targets.

Couple things you can do.  Tire gloss and car wax help a lot as does bar soap.  Small bars from the hotel work great.  When making the arrows it is best to keep the finish coats very thin as a thin coat dries harder than a thick one.

Foam targets stop an arrow with friction, which builds heat.  It is hard to tell if the heat melts the foam, the finish or both.  I used MinWax oil base poly thinned 3 or 4:1 for several years and had very little to no burn with it.  Use the gloss, it is a harder finish.  The spar finishes are also softer and more prone to burning.
Good judgement comes from experience.  Experience comes from bad judgement.

I have tried gasket lacquer, wipe on poly, polycrylic, truoil, and thunderbird( thanks Don) and none stopped it. Seeing how about 60% of my shooting is 3D i'm going back to aluminum. The work involved and the cost is not worth it to me.

Any type of lubricant on the front of the shaft seems to help. Furniture polish  bacon grease on rags etc wipe on the first 6" or so every few shots. Makes pulling the arrows a lot easier too. Learned that trick at our bow club.

I have been having the same problem and one of the ladies from 3d shooting club suggested Ivory hand soap,on the first few inches of the arrow. And it works. Maxx

X 2 on the bar soap.  Just carry the tail end of a bar with you and rub it 6-7" behind the point.

I just use good old Johnson Floor Paste Wax before I hit the Course. I generally have a can in the truck with me too! Works pretty well, and the Foam Crud comes off with a fingernail scrape.

I use soap too..................you can spray teflon on the very tip area too; but don't let it get back at all where you pull with your hands.

I always thin my finish with mineral spirits and use spray on silicone on my finished arrows every other shoot.  I've been shooting the same dozen sitka spruce arrows for almost a year now and none have any target burn.

Wax them they will slide in and out easier. I like target burn as well as the dings they get from getting hit makes be know they were in the right spot when they get dinged.

Meh. If I want to use wooden arrows I prefer changing my target to a material that does not cause burning instead of oozing my arrows with greasy stuff. =)

But soap and silicon are good advice when you cannot change the target. Like club and competition.

"BUTCHERS " wax or "Johnsons" paste wax for  Hard wood floors works great . Will reduce friction on the arrow up front  helps seal it from moisture also .
