I thought I was in decent shape. Now I know I am in only moderately decent shape.

I do really well on mu PT test every year(granted.. it is the USAF pt test)for my age. I do better than some kids 10-15 years younger than me. I should do even better this year if I keep at this type exercise.

Just basic exercises like squat thrusts, push ups, sprints, pull ups, sit ups are gut wrenching when all combined in a no rest super quick pace.

A no equipment work out for instance could be 20 squat thrusts with a pushup thrown in(burpie) 20 squats with no weight and a 100 yard dash as fast as you can... repeat 4 times for time. Basically do the exercises as fast as you can with good form. A killer workout in 20 mins or less.

PowDuck,

If the price of a CF gym membership is too steep for you look at the Train To Hunt website basically it is under $100/yr. for all the exercise routines and access to the exercise videos. For the cost of 6 months worth of a CF gym you can set up a small gym at home and do your workouts there.

Example of a crossfit workout:

5 Pullups
10 Pushups
15 Squats (no weight)

Do as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes.

I did the above workout the other day for the first time since ACL surgery 5 months ago.  Was able to do 14 rounds.

The best guys at my gym do it up to 23 times.

Crossfit really is not that expensive.  I have never taken a class I just pay for a membership at the gym and go do my own thing off of workouts they post on the net.

Try it out sometime you might like it!

Crossfit is free?  For $500 bucks I set up a home gym in my garage.

I bought the Olympic weights at a second hand store.  I bought a horse stall mat for a pad.  I bought a pull up bar, jump rope, medicine ball and 2 kettle balls also second hand.  I had a flat bench, oh and I got an ABMAT for situps online.  I also rigged an old horse lead rope for my climbing rope.  Throw in some lifting gloves, ipod, and a good pair of crosstraining shoes and you're set.

My wish list includes, a rowing machine and rings.

The website is free and the videos are there for every one to view.  There's something about the WODs being posted daily that puts it in real time and makes you want to keep at it.

I have never enjoyed my elkhunts as much as the last three seasons when I actually took time to get in top shape.  I've always been lean and hiked alot, but being in total shape including core and upperbody is great.  Also I can hold and shoot my heavy elk limbs much better.  My 2 cents.

Jeff

PS  If you start it... start with little to no weight on the bar and get the lift movements down before you push it.  I strained my shoulder overdoing it the first month I got into it.
