Who's Using Scent-Lok Suits this Fall???
« on: July 28, 2007, 10:02:00 AM »
Hello Everyone,

Just wondering who uses these Scent-Lok suits. I never see too many posts about them on Tradgang.I was curious how they work. I'm gonna be spending most of my time on the ground this year in the pop-up tent blinds. Just wondering if the suits are a big advantage? Thank for all the input.Have a great day.

I use Scent-Lok and believe it definitely helps.  IMO it should'nt change how you hunt and you still have to pay attention to the wind.  Cleanliness, Scent Away products, proper clothing storage, and rubber boots are more important to me, but I think the Scent-Lok buys me a little more time and along with other care in not leaving scent, it is effective.

I used my suit-overalls actually-for about a year. They do not breathe well enough for ground hunting. If you follow the intructions they work as well as anything else you followed the instructions on.

After about a million threads on hunt forums you can probably still get someone fired up enough to debate you as to their effectiveness.  In my opinion, the greatest advantage if any type of product is found if it instills confidence in the user.  A confident hunter will sit still longer,  If camo, scent lock, cover scent, or another product help to that end then they are worth using.

I used scent lock for a while and then I stopped for two reasons.  First, the pants I had were hot and didn't have button legs.  You had to take off your boots to get them off and they were uncomfortable to wear without a pair of jeans on under them. It was a pain in the neck to slide them off after an archery hunt.

Second, there were so many negative threads that I started to doubt the effectiveness of it.  The comments that made the most impression on me had to do with the fact that most modern home dryers use a heat senser to regulate the need for heat as they dry clothes therefore they never achieve a high enough temperature to reactivate the carbon in the suits.  I have no idea if that is true, but I heard it enough to start doubting the effectiveness of the product.

The bottom line is that confidence and mental attitude are a key ingredient in making you sit longer and seat-time is directly related to hunting success.  Products like scent-lock serve best by marketing confidence.

I have found Scent lok to loose it effectiveness pretty fast. However, most of the clothing that incorporates Scent lok (or other similar products) are very well made garments and the Scent lok liners add a layer of quiet wind breaking membrane. Having said that I have found that having a base layer of the bacterial fighting under garments that use silver in them works very well, is more affordable and requires no more maintenance than my regualr hunting clothing. I often find hunting garments at Sierra Trading post. They have great prices if they have your size. I often wind up buying clothing with scent eliminating linings but not beacause I want the scent lok, I just want well made clothing at a good price and I often find what I want or need there. Again, simply because they do tend to be warmer than other styles I like the additional layer when the weather starts to cool down.

I've used my "old green" type of Scent Lok for three seasons. I only put them on at the truck or after I cool off when I hike way back to a stand. Never wear them anywhere but the woods and charge them up in the dryer every three weeks. As far as I know I have not had a deer smell me for three years. Also I use chlorphyll tablets starting two weeks before season.  Does this help?  I really do not know; but I get deer killed at "three step" range about every year.

I will be wearing mine. I have two different suits and will not go hunting without it.

JDS3: I am with you on the chlorophyll. Have been using it so long it is hard to remember not using it. It is, IMO, one of those little things that a lot of guys do not do either because they haven't heard of it or think it is risky to put into your body. I've had no ill effects from it and it seems to have made a big difference in getting critters closer when you are on the ground.

Chad....I bet you would go to the woods without it if you had to   :saywhat:

Bill Carlsen....One can accomplish the same thing by picking wild garlic and chewing it, or rubbing garlic onto the skin.  The oil of garlic will permeate the skin.

I wouldn't go hunting with it 8^).   Unless it completely locks out your body's own breathing system it will not keep scent at bay. As soon as you walk with any exertion, you will begin to sweat and that sweat has to be emitted as odor through neck or sleeve vents.

Getting busted now and then is part of the learning process, and I don't want to lessen that experience; it keeps me honest and on my toes.

It is good for the economy of those who make and sell it, however...so you have to decide for yourself.

confidence is the key in scent-lok/scent-blocker. keeping the wind in your face and keeping clean & using a good coverscent is just as good if not better. The American Indians didn't have scent-lok/blocker, camo or anyother type of scent away & cleaner.

I found just making your own scent cover from whats in the woods and try my best to keep the wind hitting my face works just fine.

I can still smell my own farts when I wear it so no. Oh well, the important thing is being a good hunter, using the wind and natural cover. Too much technology just complicates things for me. T-Bone

I've used it with really good success,Having deer right down wind of me on the ground,,I beleive it helps but like it was said above its not full proof, I really like it as an under layer the most and will continue to wear it just for that reason,,It move like your wearing a pair of sweat pants,,JB

I've owned them since they first came out, and believe in them, but you still gotta play the wind. They do help to keep the deer calm when the wind swirls gently at the moment of truth. But play the wind as much as i can.jonesy

Sorry, but my idea of Scent lock is not farting while in my tree. We all have to figure out what part of the game we are wanting gto play and then play it.  Scent lock clothing is not part of my game.

Ill use mine if only for the 3d leafy affect..Ive had deer 15 ft away sitting in a tripod downwind looking at me and never realize what theyre looking at. Not saying that I wasnt over their scent height and thats why they didnt smell me but sure made me think about it

Just yesterday I was sweating like an opera singer in hell while shooting a 3D course. I looked over to shoot the next 3D buck when suddenly it lifted it's head up! Yep, a real deer! Nice buck! I was no more than 15 yards down wind. I had camo shorts but no head gear, etc. That being said I do use it as an underlayer. Very comfortable and it may help some. My first layer is some kind of skin tight high tech stuff. I KNOW that it definitely isn't necessary for success though!
