Target - What you think?
« on: April 04, 2012, 06:25:00 PM »
Do you think if you took one of those cheap (kids) ball or old basketballs, poke some small holes in it for ventilation, shoot some of the spray insulation foam in it,might make a good stump shooting target. You could attach some rope to it, where you could throw it. Going to try it.Just wondering if someone has done this already?

Wow. I was out stump shooting this morning (and broke an arrow) and was thinking EXACTLY the same thing. Am going to hit the thrift store tamale.

I'm going to add a rope handle to throw it, too.

If you get one of the dodge ball type balls it will work. I think depending on the basketball some of them will rub the finish on your arrows. The dodge balls are thinner and rubber and will do well. Just a tip spray a little foam and let it cure and then spray some more a day or two later and so on.To much to soon and it doesnt cure in the center. I do this with the collapsible turkey decoys(3 for $20. at dicks) for target.

Yup, Ernie it will work fine.  Just do like lpcjon2 says, and foam a little at a time.  I did that with a deflated soccer ball - tough skin and take a lot of shots.  We use it for running rabbit shots or just huck it out there to shoot at random distances.

Like Rag G says, it will work fine, done it a bunch to make cheap targets. YOu can also use bottles that liquid laundry detergent, the big ones come in, does great.

Not to highjack the tread, but I have been thinking of doing like ipcjon2 and using the foam turkey decoys to make some targets. You can usually pick them up pretty cheap after turkey season. Ipcjon2, what did you do for legs?

I've done the basketball thing for a couple of years now.  Had an old partially deflated and weathered basketball and shot it with my VPA and Hex blunts, can't hurt the darn thing. If arrows bounce to far back, let out some more air.

I just cut a 6" deep hole where the legs go that an empty 12ga shotgun shell will fit in. place the shell(punch out the primer with a bolt and hammer) in with the brass in the bird. then I cut a aluminum arrow 20- 24"(fall stalker)and pop the nock off, put an insert and field point in it and place the coned nock end in the shot shell. It will spin in the primer hole with the wind and when you hit it/.

Pizza Boxes!!!!  Duct tape the edges leaving the little tab on the front open.  Spray some expanding foam (use the little extension straw to get it spread out)through the tab.  Fill about 1/2 full and place about 20-30#s of weight on it to keep it flat as it expands.

I did same with cardboard box kids diapers came in.  Worked pretty well, but i really like the turkey decoy idea.  Saw a few on sale at Dick's already.

We use a basketball slightly deflated but use blunts. The rubber blunts bounce off & don't injure the ball. Kick the balk & shoot. 2 points while moving then 1 point for a hit when it stops. Play to 21 or whatever. Great hunting practice

We use the old soccer balls that the kids don't use anymore. Make sure you put several holes so the foam can setup. That is some sticky stuff to get off the shaft if not dry.

Here's another suggestion...Think small (aim small, miss small).  When you go stump shoot'in with judo's take a couple of tennis balls.  You can throw them short or long and your target is smaller so your concentration is better (IMHO) plus they are a brighter target.  The smaller target helps me to focus better.

I bet the basketball will work too.
Good shoot'in.
