Help me kill my Turkey Nemesis!!!!
« on: April 17, 2012, 06:24:00 PM »
Ok so I now have an official nemesis!
I have called the same bird in 3 times in 2 days and he is whooping my butt.
Here is the lay of the land.

1st encounter (day 1) i called the bird in off the roost and he strutted by the pond to within 30 yards of the blind. I had a Jake and Hen decoy out and he stopped at 30 yards looked them over, let out a put then followed the yellow colored line just below the ridge then came up at the Pink line on the right and proceeded to strut out of view. (the property line ends where the pink line and yellow line touch on the right side) (no decoys)

2nd encounter (day 2) Called the bird in off the roost. He strutted down the pink line on the left to the property line then turned and walked back in the direction he came after he saw the blind.

3rd encounter (day 2) 2:00pm the bird followed the same path as day 1 this time staying 70 yards out. he dropped below the ridge top then proceeded to put as he crested the ridge at the property line and strutted the pink line on the right for an hour. (no decoys)

This bird has GOTTA GO!
My plan for day 4 is to set the blind on the end of the pond. The path is only 10 yards wide at this point and any bird coming down the path will not see the blind until they are even with the end of the pond.

Any other ideas?

Funny- Squirrel Bait- I was thinking the exact same thing!

mg- you may want to scrap the calling and dekes and just ambush the sucker. I have done that often- with #6s.  :)   Maybe a last minute small purr or cluck to coax him. . .

If set #4 does not work try the strut zone with no decoys.

Ditch the blind and hide yourself in a pile of brush/branches. If you can, get a couple hundred yards away from where you were before. He's seeing something he doesn't like. I'd still use the decoys. Set them up facing you about 10 yards out.

A gobbler will stay in his lek waiting for hens to come to him and for the most part he won't leave the lek unless you run him off.

If you want to kill him leave him alone for 2-3 days then slip very quietly into his area before sun rise and sit in a natural blind with full camo including mask and brown gloves.   Sit low with your back against a tree that will break up your outline, keep your gun on your raised knee so you don't have any visible movement, sit dead still and only move your eyes.

Leave your blind at home.  Blinds are fine if you're hunting over a feeder but turkeys are incredibly smart and spooky and they know every leaf, limb and twig in their area.  Anything that they don't see during the normal year is suspect and you cannot kill him that way.

If he doesn't gobble when he flies down, or if you don't hear him fly down but you hear him yelp on the ground after he has flown down,  cluck once or twice quietly and then be quiet and keep your eyes open.   If he does gobble give him a couple of soft yelps...no more...and be quiet with your gun up and your eyes open.

Being out of a blind allows you to move on him if you need to but one thing to remember is to limit your calling.   One or two choppy yelps or a purr or 2-3 yelps and he knows you're there.   Let him hunt you.

Keep in mind that taking this bird may require a lot more time than you really ought to invest in him.   I'm convinced that some of them cannot be killed "fair and square".    Good luck with it.

Are you wearing face mask and glvoes in your blind? are you wearing a black shirt in your blind? Do you have anything flapping on your blind? Is your blind facing the sun? Do you have more than one side of the blind windows fully opened?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you probably have your answer to why he is running away... Give him a day or two to get back in a nice routine...
Get in there before day light... use just a hen deke or no deke at all, light calling the softer you can call the better you are... I can't stress the lost hen yelp, by far the greatest call once a bird is on the ground...Once he answers cluck and purr if he hangs up other than that...shut up and keep tension on your string he will be there...Good Luck and smile big in the hero picture...   :biglaugh:

What kind of blind are you using?

What kind of decoys? Picks would be better

I bet its not the blind unless your using it in the wrong way as stated above. Sometimes it dosen't take much if they have been shot at before or been with a bird that's been shot at by the shotgun guys. Your giving him a lot of credit when it's might be something simple like crappy decoys or just to much calling.

I like the idea of setting up again in one of his travel routes with the blind keep the netting up, use one hen decoy or none. Change calls since he's heard you already and call just enough he knows your there but play hard to get.

Chasing them with a bow can be easy at times but sometimes you have to work for a bird and that's just fine with me.

Good luck and shoot strait.     :archer:

I could have killed him any of the previous encounters with a gun but I determined to stay with the bow. I only had the dekes out the first time. I don't believe it's anything to do with the blind itself because I killed a gobbler out of it at the same location on Saturday and have had numerous hens walk right by it.

Oh ya, netting is always up. It's a DB Matrix. I do wear black inside the blind

Yea it does, Congrats on the other bird! I agree with Tracy change calls and keep it light and soft just enough to get his attention, you remember grade school the girl you wanted the most usually showed you the least attention... Play hard to get and see what happens...Good Luck!

So set #4 didn't work. It appears the birds are now hen'd up. I had 4 hens go by early in the morning but no gobblers. There was very few gobbles. On my way out I jumped a tom closely following a hen. I'll give it a few days rest and be back after em on Monday!
