Sights on a stick bow ?
« on: April 18, 2012, 12:44:00 PM »
Ok, I just read this post about sights on the wifes bow.  http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=115956

It lead me to asking this, please don't banish me from trad gang !

A few years back I drank the koolaid and went back to my roots of traditional archery. I realized I had to get rid of the training wheel bows as I would use them as a crutch come deer season.

My job has since changed and requires late hours and ocasionally out of town stays. I might not get in the practice I need to be a hunter. I will not hunt if I don't feel I am accurate enough. I really don't want to sit out hunting season,  but I want a backup plan that don't include training wheels !

Do they make some kind of strap on site ? Something I could throw on a month before the season if I don't feel comfortable with my shooting ?

I'm thinking about buying a cheap stick bow at comptons to drill & install sights on as a backup plan if I had to, but I thought I would ask about a strap on sight as I have seen some pretty slick strap on quivers that look like they wouldn't move. I'm a hunter, not a shooter, by that I mean I limit myself to 15 - 20 yard shots.

Just curious on your thoughts (please don't kick me out of the trad club !  As this is just a backup plan ! )

Thanks,
Dan

No problem using sights.  I do on my recurve.  Check out Jack Howard... he's one of the great recurve builders and bowhunters of the past.  He hunted with sights.

Why not rig some lights and old carpet behind the target in your back yard? 24 hr range and almost guaranteed recovery of your arrows! I find that the midset I have when I return to shooting from a time off is key to how quickly I will regain my ability.

You have to do what you must to be ethical when you shoot at an animal. I dont know of a strap on sight. But maybe a piece of tape on the back of the risor with marked yardage lines that you can line up with the target just to the right of the kill zone.

I have seen photos of folks even using toothpics and matchsticks taped on the handles.gotta be something better now, those pics were 40 years or so old.

Sights on recurves and longbows have been used a lot longer than many on here have been alive.  I used them 50 years ago when I screwed one pin on the back of a Ben Pearson bow.

I say go ahead and do not worry about what others say or think.  Some folks can't even use carbon or aluminum arrows without getting anguish from the trad elites.

Of course, sights may be prohibited at some shoots and participants will have to play by the rules.

Good luck...

Back in the good old days some guys taped a round headed pin on the back of the bow. Worked great. One pin is good for 20 to 30 yards if you set it about 25 yards.
If you go to a hobby store you can get them with colored round bead heads.

God bless you, Steve

Here's what I did on my bow.
Took a little time with hand tools, but it works great and doesn't booger up my bow with drilled holes.

Wow, I pleasantly surprised with the replies !  Very positive & supportive. Thanks Burnsie for that link to your post, it shows I should of searched this first before posting.

I'm glad I did post as I'm happy to see the positive replies ! Hopefully I won't need to even do this and I will get enough practice in. I can shoot at dark, my target is near my yard light. But that don't do me any good if I'm stuck in a motel room.

Thanks for the PM Jon !

Back in my youth target archery days when my folks got me my first bow and didn't want to dump a lot of money into it, we taped a q-tip to the back of the riser site window with electrical tape. Run the tape the full length of the q-tip.  One of the aforementioned round-head pins can easily be stuck into the q-tip ans stays in place fairly well.

I've never tried this, but I remember reading years ago about a hunter who taped a big eraser (the kind you used in elementary school) to his sight window. Into that he stuck a round headed pin or two and viola.....had adjustable sights.
Like I said, I've never tried it, but it sounds to me like it would work.

I used two sided tape to put a old Merrill heart shot sight on my longbow to work on form.  Works great!  It really allows you to see your form flaws and I wouldn't hesitate to used it for hunting if I felt the need.
