Arrow of Light
« on: April 18, 2012, 09:17:00 PM »
Tomorrow night I dress up as Akela and bring arrows for the boys who have achieved the highest award in Cub Scouting. At the same time I hope to get them interested in Archery. Here are the arrows that I have made up for five boys.
If you notice, I have crested the arrows with their achievements by using rank colors.

I have fun doing this. Just thought I would share the fun. (:

Those kids will be so proud, good on you for helping them out.

ROCK ON.  Those will inspire any kid.  Heck, it just inspired me.  Awesome job.  I'd like to see the follow up on here with pics from the arrow exchange.  Always nice to see kids getting involved in such a wonderful sport.

I did a little volunteer arrow building last year for our local Pack. Used some stone points.

Then added flu-flu fletching and painted their rank colors on the full length of the shaft. Here's the proud recipients.

Danny,

That is awesome! Did you shoot the arrows or just give them as awards? I bought some flint and was trying to knapp arrow heads to build these but was worried about the head breaking.

Martin -

Those were given as awards and made for that purpose. I cut in the string nock and wrapped with artificial sinew. I then cut in the point grooves with the edge of a small flat file and custom fit each head to its own shaft. Used some epoxy to set each head and hold in place while I again wrapped with artificial sinew. It may not look like it, but each arrow spun perfectly. I made certain each scout knew the arrow was for wall hanging and not for shooting.

Danny,

They are great looking! Someday, when I grow up, I want to make something like them.

I also see you had the OA there. Did they put on a good show?

I worked with a Boy Scout troop for about 10 years in my younger days, including Archery merit badge counselor. That was a great time in my life, and it is apparent you are having a blast also. The arrows look fantastic. Thanks and congratulations for doing this fine thing for the younger crowd.

Absolutely was a great show. Clear cool night with a very impressive ceremony. Flaming arrow was chilling.
