Modify needle-point broadhead tip
« on: April 18, 2012, 11:16:00 PM »
I hear that alot of folks modify the tip of their needlepoint broadheads (eclipse, zwickey, Magnus)

I've tried searching, but I cannot find how to modify the tip on my broadheads. Taking them from a needlepoint to a small tanto or maybe rounded.

Any wisdom or know how?

I just take a small file and drag it at and angle on each side of the needle point to slightly square up the tip.  I usually do this after sharpening and then touch the broadhead back up some after doing it.

Like lefty said, take a file and round it.

I remember years ago  when my dad was on Fred Bears advisory staff.  He went to a meeting in Grayling and during the meeting Fred brought in a orthopedic surgeon to discuss what kind of damage could be done with a sharp or needle point versus a rounded point.  The end result was a round point would do more damage to bone than a one that came to a sharp point.

My pick would be a tanto tip.I like to spin my arrows to check tip alignment and I can't do that with a round or chisel tip.I always want to check tip alignment after every shot in the field.

The trick is to scribe a line from your tip, back so if you clip the point off,you have an established centerline for your new tip.

I then file the angle I want, from both directions, keeping the tip on the centerline. After that,I double bevel each side of the tanto, app. the same angle as the rest of the blade edges.

You can go to tuffhead.com and listen to Doc Ashby's audios from Kzoo,on point tips.Tanto's worked best, rounded were second but he said needle tips probably would work best except they are way more prone to bend or break.

My main reason for the tanto is tip strengthening plus still being able to check tip alignment.
