Paul Schafer articles?
« on: April 22, 2012, 09:56:00 PM »
I've read several online articles about Paul but I'm trying to determine if the following articles were ever published and if so which magazines?

I've got an incomplete list but can't find some things in storage right now. "A Friend of Gold" by myself. Bowhunter Magazine, Aug/Sept. '93 issue; "Cape Buffalo" by Paul himself in the same issue. An interview with Paul Schafer, by myself, in an Aug./Sept. issue of (I believe) Bowhunter or Traditional Bowhunter magazine. I have the copy but don't have the original handy. "A Weekend With Schaf", Professional Bowhunter magazine by myself, in Vol. 29, Number 1, First Quarter 2007. The same article is also a chapter in my book, "Once Upon A Tine" (www.brothersofthebow.com)). "Yesterday's Hero.. Tomorrows Legend" by myself, Traditional Bowhunter magazine, Aug./Sept. '93 issue. Fall Hunting Preview, Supplement to Consumers Press 2001, "The Paul Schafer I've Come to Know" by Chris Murphy. Outdoor Montana, "Looking at his Achievements" (about Paul Schafer) by Jeff Mayer, April 27, 1994 Great Falls (MT)Tribune. "Schafer.. A Legend in his own Time" by Mark Downey, Great Falls Tribune. "Paul Schafer 1949-1993" by Paul Brunner in Bowhunting News, Vol. 4, issue 9, March '93. Montana Bowhunters Association publication, "The Paul Schafer I Knew" by Robert Windauer, Vol 21, #1, Sept. 1993. Kalispell (MT) News (Interlake), Jan. 29, 1993 an extensive newspaper article about Paul called Smoke Signals by Lew Bain. Mr. Bain was the father of Ron Bain, who was a close friend and college roommate of Paul's. Ron was the fullback for MSU when Schaf was a running back. There was also a feature article about Paul by Jeff Murry (I believe it was in Sports Afield, Field & Stream or Outdoor Life magazine but I don't have it handy. I'm told Bob Windauer is presently writing a book about Paul Schafer. Knowing Bob, I'll guarantee he'll do an excellent job upon completion. Paul Schafer was an amazing man and in my opinion the best all around bowhunter who ever lived. BW

The article Barry talks about that Jeff Murray wrote is "The Best The World Never Knew" in Outdoor Life August 1994. That magazine has kicked around with me from the day I picked it up at the grocery store. I have it it my hands as I write. I was 24 years old back then and was getting fed up with hunting with my compond. I had just started following Paul and the Wensels. I thought this is what it is all about now. These guys know how to hunt and have fun! I was in shock when I had heard of Pauls accident and read everything I could about the man. I never shot a compond again and since have never had equipment failure. I owe it all to Paul and the Wensels they made a big difrence in why I bowhunt.

I for one am looking forward to Mr. Windauer's book. I have long admired Paul and what he was able to accomplish in his life. I was fortunate enought to have met him years ago at our states bowhunters banquet. He was kind enought to let me shoot his personal bow so I could get a feel for his custom made bows. I too believe he was most likely the greatest bowhunter, ever.

I met Bob Windauer at Denton Hill in Coudersport PA one year at the Schafer Silvertip "booth". He was there with his son Dave hanging around and chatting. I had my two childeren with me and let  tell you if he writes as well as he tells stories it will be a great book! He told us stories about his time in Africa and other places as well. He is a great guy who took time to talk to three strangers and he made us feel like we were close friends. Can't wait for this book on Paul.
